Baseball update: JMU canceled, Longwood added
OK, so I made that up. I don’t think there’s such a thing as the rain belt. It only seems that way when it comes to Liberty baseball and home games.
The Flames were scheduled to face James Madison today at 3 p.m. at Worthington Stadium, but with rain expected to fall all day, the game has been called off. JMU won’t make the trip down from Harrisonburg.
Liberty has already lost a three-game home series and several mid-week games to rain, so the Flames added a game Thursday at Longwood to fill the void. First pitch in Farmville is at 6 p.m.
If all of the rain dodging has done anything for LU baseball coach Jim Toman, it’s made him a better forecaster. After researching five different weather forecast models last Friday, Toman moved the first pitch of the Presbyterian game up from 7 p.m. to 3 p.m. The game was over around 5:30. It began pouring at 5:45 and didn’t let up all night.
Same thing happened Saturday. First pitch moved from 3 p.m. to noon. Game over at 2 p.m. Deluge at 3 p.m. Like clockwork.
So maybe Toman has a calling if this baseball thing doesn’t work out.
