Big South MBB power rankings, 2/16

The Big South week is done after Tuesday’s games, and everyone save for Asheville and Gardner-Webb has two games to play. (The brothers Bulldogs each play three more.) Let’s look at the true league standings. One point for a road win, nothing for a home win or a road loss and minus-1 point for a home loss. Numbers on parentheses denote a team has locked up that seed in the upcoming Big South tournament. NE—Not eligible. ELIM—Eliminated.

(1) Coastal Carolina—7
(15-1 ... 7-1H, 8-0A)

(2) Liberty—4
(13-3 ... 8-1H, 5-2A)

UNC Asheville—1
(8-7 ... 3-4H, 5-3A)

Winthrop—1
(8-8 ... 5-2H, 3-6A)

Charleston Southern—1
(8-8 ... 6-1H, 2-5A)

VMI—minus-1
(8-8 ... 4-5H, 4-3A)

(NE) Presbyterian—minus-1
(6-10 ... 4-3H, 2-7A)

High Point—minus-2
(7-9 ... 6-3H, 1-6A)

Gardner-Webb—minus-3
(4-11 ... 2-5H, 2-6A)

(ELIM) Radford—minus-7
(2-14 ... 2-7H, 0-7A)

Now onto this week’s rankings:

1. COASTAL CAROLINA
Previous rank: 1
Overall record: 24-3
Big South record: 15-1
Last week: Beat Presbyterian College, 61-41; beat Winthrop, 61-56
This week: Lost to Gardner-Webb, 59-57; Saturday vs. North Carolina Central
The skinny: I suppose we should be stunned that Coastal Carolina lost at home to Gardner-Webb. Then again, the first result in Boiling Springs portended of this. Coastal needed a late rally, including seven straight points from Desmond Holloway, to escape Paul Porter Arena with a win. Sometimes a team just matches up well with another. That seems to be the case here. The bigger concern going forward for Coastal Carolina is the status of point guard Kierre Greenwood, who left just before halftime with a knee injury. He’ll have an MRI today. He’s a huge, underrated part of that team. He’s one of the best on-ball defenders in the league and runs the point with poise. Anthony Raffa can fill that void, but who then fills the reserve spark-plug role that Raffa currently fills? Coastal’s depth will take a major hit if Greenwood is out for any period of time.

2. LIBERTY
Previous rank: 2
Overall record: 19-9
Big South record: 13-3
Last week: Beat Radford, 79-71; beat High Point, 65-54
This week: Lost to VMI, 79-69; Saturday vs. Iona
The skinny: I hate to admit this, but someone at the Vines Center asked me on Saturday if I thought the High Point game on Saturday was a trap game for the Flames. I said no, but I thought Liberty would get blown out at VMI on Tuesday. It just made too much sense. Liberty would essentially have nothing to play for in terms of tournament seeding, and VMI was fighting for a home tournament game, and Austin Kenon was playing his last (scheduled) home game at Cameron Hall. It wasn’t a total blowout, but VMI was in control for the last 33 minutes or so. The Flames will be fine going forward. David Minaya has a few games left to work through his shooting slump. He’s taking good shots, just missing them long. When you miss seven in a row, you’ll press, and that’s what happened in the second half at VMI. The Keydets played better defensively than I’ve ever seen them play on Tuesday, for what it’s worth.

3. VMI
Previous rank: 7
Overall record: 15-11
Big South record: 8-8
Last week: Beat High Point, 87-74; beat Radford, 71-58
This week: Beat Liberty, 79-69; Saturday at Morgan State
The skinny: The Keydets make a major surge thanks to an increased emphasis on defense and an ability to play multiple styles of basketball to win games. Austin Kenon is on a mission, and he should be the fifth player on the all-Big South first team when it’s released in a couple of weeks (joining the two from Coastal and the two from Liberty). Trying to decipher the Nos. 3-7 teams is difficult at this point, but VMI saved its season by finally holding serve at home and winning three games it had to have. The season finale at Winthrop could be for a tournament home game. D.J. Covington is a really nice player, and he makes a difference for this team on offense and defense. He scores around the basket, alters shots simply with his presence, rebounds and even shows a little bit of mid-range game. The X-factor seems to be Keith Gabriel, who is very capable of blowing up for 20 points but has been horribly inconsistent of late.

4. WINTHROP
Previous rank: 3
Overall record: 12-14
Big South record: 8-8
Last week: Beat Charleston Southern, 75-68; lost to Coastal Carolina, 61-56
This week: Lost to High Point, 70-69 (2OT); Saturday vs. Ohio
The skinny: I just don’t know what to make of this team. The Eagles scored 13 points in the first half at High Point, which is abysmal. But they got another huge double-double out of Charles Corbin (17 points, 15 boards) and only lost in double OT when Nick Barbour hit a runner at the buzzer. Crazy. I still think this is the team Liberty least wants to see in the tournament (just a hunch). The Eagles host Liberty and VMI to end the season, the toughest schedule left for any of the teams in the 3-7 mix. Robbie Dreher went 0-for-6 from the floor last night, his only oh-fer of the season.

5. CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
Previous rank: 5
Overall record: 14-14
Big South record: 8-8
Last week: Lost to Winthrop, 75-68; lost to Presbyterian College, 61-48
This week: Beat UNC Asheville, 79-70; Saturday at UNC Wilmington
The skinny: After playing one of the worst weekends of his career, Jamarco Warren bounced back with a 31-point showing in a game the Buccaneers desperately needed Tuesday against Asheville. That gives the Bucs a season split with Asheville. They’re in great shape in terms of tiebreaking scenarios, as they split with everyone in the 3-7 mix save for VMI, which they swept. Forward Kelvin Martin was back last night as well, and he provided a huge lift with nine points and four rebounds in 29 minutes. Of the teams in the 3-7 group, CSU has the most favorable schedule, hosting ninth-place Gardner-Webb and first-place Coastal Carolina. A split should be enough to secure a first-round home game, and a sweep could be enough to get the Bucs the three seed.

6. UNC ASHEVILLE
Previous rank: 4
Overall record: 13-12
Big South record: 8-7
Last week: Beat Gardner-Webb, 59-56
This week: Lost to Charleston Southern, 79-70; Saturday vs. Northeastern
The skinny: Asheville actually is the only team in control of its destiny for the No. 3 seed. If the Bulldogs win out (a tough task, seeing as one of those games is at Coastal), they claim the No. 3. Asheville played again without center D.J. Cunningham on Tuesday, meaning more minutes against for freshman Toles Hartman. Tough schedule next week for Asheville, which plays at Coastal Tuesday before returning home for games on Thursday and Saturday.

7. HIGH POINT
Previous rank: 7
Overall record: 11-15
Big South record: 7-9
Last week: Lost to VMI, 87-74; Lost to Liberty, 65-54
This week: Beat Winthrop, 70-69 (2OT); Saturday vs. Appalachian State
The skinny: The Panthers have figured out how to win at home, but they’re still awful on the road. Bad thing for High Point is that unless they find a way to sweep the Asheville/Gardner-Webb trip next week, it will be on the road for the conference tournament. High Point might be without Corey Law for the rest of the season, meaning the Panthers will need to get post contributions from Georges Massoda and Earnest Bridges. Du’Vaughn Maxwell is a nice player but he isn’t much of an offensive rebounder. The Panthers are dangerous, though, because Nick Barbour can get smoking hot at any time and torch a team for 30 points.

8. GARDNER-WEBB
Previous rank: 8
Overall record: 9-18
Big South record: 4-11
Last week: Lost to UNC Asheville, 59-56
This week: Beat Coastal Carolina, 59-57; Saturday at Tennessee Tech
The skinny: Gardner-Webb has clinched the final Big South tournament spot and can move up to No. 7 if it wins its final three games (@CSU, vs. RAD, vs. HPU) and High Point loses its game at Asheville. The Bulldogs have hung in games of late with sticky defense, and that philosophy paid off against Coastal, a team Gardner-Webb obviously matches up well with. Watch out next year when Chris Holtmann gets some players who can score. The Bulldogs are going to be dangerous down the road.

9. PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE
Previous rank: 9
Overall record: 12-16
Big South record: 6-10
Last week: Lost to Coastal Carolina, 61-41; beat Charleston Southern, 61-48
This week: Beat Radford, 52-49 (OT); Saturday vs. Davidson
The skinny: Presbyterian played its final road game on Tuesday and gutted out a win at Radford. The Blue Hose still have a chance at eight conference wins, which would be a heck of a feat considering their injury issues. Beating both VMI and Liberty at home will be difficult, though.

10. RADFORD
Previous rank: 10
Overall record: 5-21
Big South record: 2-14
Last week: Lost to Liberty, 79-71; lost to VMI, 71-58
This week: Lost to Presbyterian, 52-49 (OT); Saturday at William & Mary
The skinny: Oy. Just when things were starting to look up (sort of), coach Brad Greenberg admits to violating NCAA rules and is suspended for the rest of the season. Then RU loses a game to Presbyterian in overtime after Pierre Miller hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left to send the game to OT. The Highlanders and Tribe can share war stories on Saturday, as William & Mary surely is having Charles Jenkins flashbacks after the Hofstra star hit the game-tying 3-pointer to send the game to OT and the game-winning 3-pointer (contested from 40 feet, no less) to beat the Tribe Tuesday.
