Carolina League power rankings, 5/28

How do the Carolina League teams stack up against each other? Check below. All records through May 28. The rankings:

1. LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (29-16)

Who’s hot? Jared Keel. The outfielder is hitting .316 with three homers and 10 RBIs in his last 10 games and has stabilized the middle of the Lynchburg lineup.

Who’s not? C Kris Watts has cooled after a sizzling start. He’s batting .231 in his last 10.

The skinny Lynchburg is the only Carolina League team with a winning record both home and away, and the Hillcats’ starting pitching has started to come around of late, with Matt McSwain, Chi-Hung Cheng and Paul Mildren all pitching well in the last week.

2. POTOMAC NATIONALS (25-19)

Who’s hot? 1B Chris Marrero has smoked the ball in his last 10 games, recording 16 hits and batting .400 with two homers and 13 RBIs. He leads Potomac with a .307 average.

Who’s not? Lefty Will Atwood is about the only Potomac starting pitcher struggling. He’s 0-4 with a 6.99 ERA and has allowed 45 hits and walked 15 in 37 1/3 innings.

The skinny Potomac’s CL North title chances took a hit last weekend when it lost two of three against Lynchburg. The Nats need to return the favor this weekend at City Stadium to stay in the race.

3. WILMINGTON BLUE ROCKS (23-22)

Who’s hot? OF David Lough has smoked the ball of late, hitting .455 in his last 10 games.

Who’s not? LHP Ray Liotta is still searching for his field of dreams, and he hasn’t been very good, fella. OK, I’ll stop. He’s bounced back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen, and opponents are hitting .336 against him.

The skinny Wilmington would actually be in first place in the Southern Division. Unfortunately, the Blue Rocks play in the North, and they’re 6-12 against division foes.

4. SALEM RED SOX (22-24)

Who’s hot? 2B Jonathan Hee struggled in the South Atlantic League, hitting .226 in 31 at-bats in Greenville. Since being promoted to Salem, though, he’s batting .304 with eight doubles, a homer and 14 RBIs.

Who’s not? RHP Seth Garrison has lost his last four decisions and has lasted more than five innings just once during that time.

The skinny The Red Sox lead the Southern Division by a half game over Winston-Salem heading into tonight’s game, but they’d be in last place in the Northern Division.

5. FREDERICK KEYS (23-23)

Who’s hot? SS Pedro Florimon, Jr., has hit .405 with six doubles, two triples and a home run in his last 10 games.

Who’s not? Two of LHP Brett Bordes’ last three relief appearance have been disasters. He gave up four hits and three earned runs in his last outing. Righties have destroyed him this season to the tune of a .405 average against and a 14.34 ERA.

The skinny P Brian Matusz continues to lead the Carolina League with 65 strikeouts.

6. WINSTON-SALEM DASH (21-24)

Who’s hot? Another Marrero makes the list, this time OF Christian Marrero, the brother of Potomac’s Chris. In his last 10 games, Christian is batting .361 and has two four-hit games.

Who’s not? What the heck has happened to Salvador Sanchez? The OF is 1-for-39 in his last 10 games with 12 strikeouts.

The skinny Winston was creeping up on the Southern Division lead until a three-game losing streak derailed the Dash.

7. KINSTON INDIANS (21-25)

Who’s hot? RHP Dallas Cawiezell has been a rock in the bullpen for the K-Tribe (1-0, 1.66 ERA, 25 K, 10 BB).

Who’s not? LHP Russell Young has struggled since a call-up from low-A Lake County (0-2, 5.96 ERA in five starts).

The skinny Kinston has just one regular hitting better than .300, but the Tribe is still in the thick of the Southern Division race thanks to stellar pitching.

8. MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS (17-28)

Who’s hot? LHP Richard Sullivan started the season in low-A Rome and has impressed since his promotion to the Dirty Myrtle. He threw a shutout Wednesday against Winston-Salem.

Who’s not? OF Jon Mark Owings is 1-for-17 in his last five games.

The skinny The banged-up Pelicans have already used 22 pitchers this season.

******

Now for a few quick notes ...

* The Hillcats have won the last five times RHP Matt McSwain has started. McSwain has made three straight quality starts, allowing just four earned runs in his last 18 2/3 innings. Location has been a big key, and he’s kept the ball down and worked spots with his fastball and slider.

* Pedro Alvarez makes another appearance at designated hitter tonight. His throwing arm is still bugging him, and he hasn’t even been able to take infield since injuring it before a game last week at Potomac.

* Harrison Bishop, one of the Pirates’ priority relievers, is slated to see some action tonight. He’s held opponents scoreless in four of his last five outings, but the one bad outing was a disaster (2 IP, 4H, 5 ER May 20 at Frederick).

* Lot of Hillcats getting a night of rest tonight in anticipation of a big series with Potomac this weekend. Alex Presley, Matt Hague, Jordy Mercer and Kris Watts are all out of the lineup.
