Carolina League power rankings, 6/5

How do the Carolina League teams stack up against each other? Check below. All records through June 4. The rankings:

1. LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (35-17)—Last rank: 1.

Who’s hot? OF Miles Durham batted .333 with six home runs and 21 RBIs in May and earned Carolina League player of the month honors. One wonders if Durham’s time in Lynchburg is running out, especially with the Nate McLouth trade opening a spot in the outfield logjam in the upper parts of the Pittsburgh organization.

Who’s not? Former third-round pick Eddie Prasch has been mired in a horrific slump, batting .032 (1-for-31) in his last 10 games.

The skinny A playoff berth seems like a formality at this point. The Hillcats own a five-game lead in the Carolina League north with 18 to play in the first half, and Lynchburg and second-place Potomac don’t play again in the first half. Even if the Hillcats play .500 ball the rest of the way, Potomac would have to play nearly perfect baseball to overtake Lynchburg.

2. POTOMAC NATIONALS (29-21)—Last rank: 2.

Who’s hot? C Sean Rooney has caught fire his last 10 games, batting .389 (14-for-36) with five doubles.

Who’s not? 2B Dan Lyons is 5-for-32 (.147) in his last 10 games and has more strikeouts (8) than hits (5) during that span.

The skinny The Nats can’t catch a weather break. They’ve had nine games postponed by rain this season.

3. WILMINGTON BLUE ROCKS (27-25)—Last rank: 3.

Who’s hot? SS Jeff Bianchi has hit .405 (15-for-37) in his last 10 games with two homers and five RBIs.

Who’s not? LHP Alex Caldera has struggled through his last three outings, allowing 20 hits and 16 earned runs in 15 innings.

The skinny The Blue Rocks could be a team to watch in the second half. Don’t expect a lot of upward movement of players, as much of this team played together last year in low-A Burlington.

4. WINSTON-SALEM DASH (26-25)—Last rank: 6.

Who’s hot? DH Lee Cruz struggled in Double-A Birmingham but has hit well since being demoted to Winston-Salem (.300, 2 HR, 11 RBIs).

Who’s not? RHP Levi Maxwell was mercifully moved to the bullpen after an atrocious start (0-8 in eight starts).

The skinny The Dash are the only Southern Division team with a winning record.

5. FREDERICK KEYS (25-28)—Last rank: 5.

Who’s hot? C Caleb Joseph is batting .417 in his last 10 games with a homer and nine RBIs.

Who’s not? LHP Nate Nery cruised through four South Atlantic League starts, going 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA at low-A Delmarva. The going hasn’t been as smooth in the Carolina League. Nery is 0-3 with a 4.65 ERA in six starts.

The skinny Catch LHP Brian Matusz while you can. He’s allowed five earned runs total in his last five starts, which makes you wonder how much longer he’ll be around at this level.

6. KINSTON INDIANS (23-29)—Last rank: 7.

Who’s hot? LHP Eric Berger has had just one bumpy start in his last five, allowing four runs in 4 2/3 innings May 24 at Frederick. In the other four starts combined, he allowed four earned runs.

Who’s not? SS Ron Rivas has struggled to get it going all season, and he’s batting just .211 in his last 10 games.

The skinny A four-game set this weekend in Winston-Salem is huge for the K-Tribe, which open the weekend 3 1/2 games back of the Dash.

7. SALEM RED SOX (23-30)—Last rank: 4.

Who’s hot? Right-handed relief pitcher Ryne Miller has pitched eight straight scoreless innings, spanning three appearances.

Who’s not? How about the entire starting pitching staff? Three of the starters have ERAs of 6.19 or worse, and the best of the bunch, Dave McKae, has a 4.70 ERA. You can’t win if you can’t get people out.

The skinny Salem has lost six of seven to fall out of the lead in the Southern Division.

8. MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS (17-28)—Last rank: 8.

Who’s hot? OF C.J. Lee has hit .316 in his last 10 games. He’s batting .295 in 25 games after an early call-up from Low-A Rome.

Who’s not? OF Cole Miles is hitting .212 in his last 10 games.

The skinny Only five Pelicans are hitting better than .250 this year.
