Carolina League power rankings, plus Hillcats notes, 6/11

Frederick southpaw Brian Matusz is set to take the mound tonight at City Stadium against Lynchburg’s Justin Wilson in the final game of a three-game set. The Keys are on the verge of elimination from the first-half race in the Carolina League North. One loss or one Lynchburg win makes it official. The Hillcats have 12 games left in the first half, Potomac has 14. Lynchburg’s magic number to clinch the division is nine, meaning any combination of Hillcat victories and National losses equaling nine will give the Cats the first-half title and clinch the team’s first playoff berth since 2005.

Matusz hasn’t given up an earned run since a May 20 start against the Hillcats in Maryland. He’s worked 23 straight scoreless innings and continues to lead the Carolina League in strikeouts by a wide margin with 75, 15 more than Wilmington’s Alex Caldera.

Some other notes before hitting up the power rankings:

* In a purely paper move, the Pirates reassigned RHP Matt McSwain to short-season Low-A State College so Wilson could start tonight. The return of Bryan Morris and the acquisition of Jeff Locke have created a logjam in the Hillcats rotation, so expect to continue to see guys shuttle back and forth between State College and Lynchburg. And I say a paper move because State College’s season has yet to begin.

* Southpaw, the Hillcats mascot, is getting some run on Deadspin today. Interesting that two of the four mascots on this list are from the Pirates organization, and that two of the four are from the Carolina League. Here’s the story.

* Check tomorrow’s News & Advance for a feature in Hillcats catcher/coach Milver Reyes, and the unique arrangement Reyes has with the Pirates organization.

Now for those power rankings ...

1. LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (38-20)—Last rank: 1.

Who’s hot? RHP Michael Dubee has been lights out since coming over in a trade with the White Sox organization in April. He’s 2-1 with a 1.39 ERA and five saves and has struck out an eye-popping 47 batters against just two walks this season.

Who’s not? SS Jordy Mercer is mired in a 7-for-39 slump in his last 10 games.

The skinny It would take a monumental collapse at this point for the Hillcats to relinquish the first-half Northern Division title.

2. WINSTON-SALEM DASH (31-26)—Last rank: 4.

Who’s hot? Since getting lit up by the Nationals on May 8, SP Anthony Carter has gone 2-0 in his last five starts, allowing more than two earned runs just once in that span.

Who’s not? INF Joel Persichina is batting 5-for-31 in his last 10 games.

The skinny The Dash have won nine of their last 10 and have taken control of the Carolina League South.

3. POTOMAC NATIONALS (32-24)—Last rank: 2.

Who’s hot? SP Bradley Meyers has only allowed 11 earned runs in 11 appearances this season (10 starts).

Who’s not? DH Tim Pahuta is batting .222 with 10 Ks in 27 ABs in his last 10 games.

The skinny The first-half North title seems out of reach at this point, but if the pitching stays together, a second-half run is a distinct possibility.

4. WILMINGTON BLUE ROCKS (33-26)—Last rank: 3.

Who’s hot? SP Everett Teaford has allowed only seven earned runs in his last seven starts.

Who’s not? OF Paulo Orlando is hitting .152 with no home runs and two RBIs in his last 10 games.

The skinny Wilmington has won six straight and could overtake Potomac for second place in the North down the stretch.

5. FREDERICK KEYS (27-32)—Last rank: 5.

Who’s hot? IF Robert Widlansky is batting .361 in 11 games since his Frederick debut.

Who’s not? How about Frederick’s defense? The Keys haven’t fielded the ball all year, and they lost a game Wednesday in which they outhit Lynchburg 16-5, mostly because of three errors.

The skinny Despite their last-place-in-the-North status, the Keys sent six players to the Carolina League-California League All-Star game.

6. KINSTON INDIANS (25-33)—Last rank: 6.

Who’s hot? C Alex Castillo is batting .303 in his last 10 games.

Who’s not? 3B Lonnie Chisenhall has hit well all season, but he’s hit a bump in his last 10 games, batting just .231 with 10 Ks in 39 ABs.

The skinny Kinston has been ravaged by call-ups more than any team in the Carolina League this season.

7. SALEM RED SOX (25-35)—Last rank: 7.

Who’s hot? P Eammon Portice, a former High Point standout, has been the steadiest pitcher in the Salem rotation this year (3-3, 4.26 ERA).

Who’s not? 2B Luis Segovia is batting 3-for-30 (.100) in his last 10 games.

The skinny Salem led the South for much of the first half, but the Red Sox have gone a woeful 5-15 in their last 20 games.

8. MYRTLE BEACH PELICANS (21-36)—Last rank: 8.

Who’s hot? P Erik Cordier has allowed more than two ones just once in nine starts.

Who’s not? OF Jason Heyward makes this list, only because he hasn’t played since late May due to an injured side muscle.

The skinny Second half can’t start soon enough in Myrtle.
