Charlottesville Regional, Day 3 blog

Lots of leftover stuff to get to from last night, and I’ll post lineups at the end of the blog when they are released. The Hoos will meet St. John’s, which eliminated Ole Miss 20-16 in Game 5. That is not a typo.

Thoughts and notes:

—UVa’s crowd last night was loud, knowledgeable and thoroughly impressive. When Keith Werman led off an inning with a 12-pitch at-bat, fouling off pitch after pitch after pitch, the crowd rose to its feet, applauding Werman’s perseverance. Don’t think the players didn’t notice.

“I’m getting chills just thinking about it now,“ Werman said in the post-game press conference.

Tyler Cannon is the only Virginia player with experience in playing a home regional. Virginia was sent to California the last two years. In 2008, the Cavs were ousted by Cal State Fullerton. In 2009, UVa advanced out of the Irvine Regional.

“It’s pretty awesome having all of these fans,“ he said. “Hearing them cheer after every great play we made, after every moment. They were all out there pulling for us. And then when the rain came, they all stayed nobody moved. That showed a lot. A lot of great support. Just great to see.“

—Werman talked about that 12-pitch at-bat.

“Leading off an inning, I’m doing whatever I can to see some pitches. He kept throwing right over the plate with two strikes, and I kept battling. I wasn’t ever going to give up. You never know in this game. You can get a hit at any time. I was kind of smiling between pitches. I’ve never done that before. It was a pretty cool experience.“

—UVa pitcher Danny Hultzen was asked if he was fighting to get his offspeed pitches to work.

“Yeah, definitely. I had the fastball working, and the changeup was a little different than it has been the last few weeks.“

—UVa coach Brian O’Connor said he had no intention of using closer Kevin Arico in a blowout situation last night, even if it meant giving him a little extra work.

“I tried that earlier this year, and it didn’t work out for me,“ O’Connor said.

He noted that Arico went an inning-plus twice at the ACC tournament to prepare him for longer outings if necessary in the NCAA tournament.

—O’Connor talked about catcher Franco Valdes and his ability to seemingly step up when needed most in the postseason.

“If there was a pill for it, you know, I’d give it to him earlier in the season. Every time, this time of year, this guy has just been Mr. Clutch for us. He can swing and miss at balls by two feet in the regular season, but at this time of the year, he’s clutch. There’s something about him. His game rises to another level.“

—St. John’s used four pitchers to beat Ole Miss. Bruce Kern went six innings and threw 104 pitches. Ryan Cole threw 45 pitches in two innings. Daniel Burawa struggled in the ninth, throwing 25 pitches in 1/3 inning and allowing four earned runs and three walks. Stephen Rivera got the last two outs on 10 pitches.

—Virginia has pretty much everyone available. O’Connor said Tyler Wilson, who threw three innings Friday against VCU, would have been available yesterday if needed. Robert Morey will start, and the rest of the bullpen is relatively fresh.

—Forecast is for a 90 percent chance of severe thunderstorms. There’s a line coming through west of town right now, and it looks pretty dark outside. Behind that line, it looks fairly clear, but with the air as humid as it is, it wouldn’t surprise me if a thunderstorm popped up out of nowhere.

—St. John’s 1-2-3 hitters against Ole Miss went 11-for-16 with nine runs scored and 12 RBIs. The Red Storm sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored eight runs.

—Virginia is the road team for this game, which makes no sense to me. I figured the high seed would be the home team in every game, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Noticed it in several other regionals as well.
