Florida guard gives Liberty verbal commitment

Liberty got a basketball commitment over the weekend from Chris Perez, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound combo guard from Oldsmar, Fla., which is located just outside of Tampa-Clearwater.

Perez averaged 24 points per game this year and helped lead Oldsmar Christian to a 24-9 record. He scored more than 2,800 points in his four-year career and was one of three Division I recruits on the Oldsmar roster, coach Ryan Pannone said.

Perez visited Utah State before visiting Liberty. After the Liberty visit, he canceled visits to Fordham, Northeastern and Creighton. Duquesne was also interested, Pannone said.

“He liked the Christian atmosphere,“ Pannone said. “And he liked the fact that the coaches were players coaches, and he liked the freelance-type system. He doesn’t feel like he’s going to be held back.“

Pannone said Perez’s strength is scoring the basketball, and in a variety of ways.

“Dunks, 3s, floaters, leaners, everything,“ Pannone said.
