Football coaching staff complete
Liberty football coach Danny Rocco announced his coaching staff for the 2009 season Saturday. The big news—quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter has been promoted to offensive coordinator, as Rocco hinted at in January. He’ll remain the QBs coach. He replaces Scott Wachenheim, who took a job coaching tight ends for the Washington Redskins.
Levern Belin comes to Lynchburg after a stint at Virginia. He’ll be the defensive line coach, replacing Chad Wilt, who left to be the defensive line coach at Virginia.
Wally Ake has been hired as the new secondary coach, and Ernie McCook comes in as the new tight ends coach and run game coordinator. Ake comes to Liberty Army. McCook was at Shepherd before making the move to LU.
Blaine McCorkle is the new offensive line coach, another role Wachenheim had last season.
Some other moves:
* Tom Clark remains the defensive coordinator and takes over as linebackers coach.
* Marshall Roberts is the new special teams coordinator and cornerback coach. He was the defensive backs coach last year.
* Pete Sundheim moves from tight ends coach to running backs coach, replacing Frank Hickson. He remains the associate head coach.
* Charlie Skalaski’s role is unchanged. He’s still recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach.
I plan on sitting down with Rocco next week and getting his thoughts on the new staff and what kind of plans he has for the upcoming season. Look for a story in Thursday’s News & Advance print edition on the new staff.
