Football signee snippets, part 2

As promised, we’ll take a recruit-by-recruit look at the 18 players who signed national letters of intent Wednesday to play football at Liberty.

Here’s the first part of the series. I’ll try to knock out six more here today and the other nine tomorrow. It seems like there might be some weather coming, so I doubt I’ll have to sit in the office and take high school call-ins tomorrow evening, leaving me plenty of time to work on this little project.

Coach Danny Rocco’s take

“Tall, lean, rangy athlete. We liked him the moment we met him and his family. We loved him on film. He did a really good job playing on the hash in the two deep and on the post in the three deep coverage. Just a really good looking, impressive looking kid. Tall and long and athletic. He had some I-A offers. The longer the process went on, the more attractive we became to him.“

GABE HENDERSON

Raleigh News & Observer story

Coach Danny Rocco’s take

“Gabe’s the guy that was really our No. 1 guy on the board. Gabe is very, very similar to Michael Brown in terms of what he looked like on high school film and the way he conducts himself. Very athletic quarterback. Very competitive student-athletes. Excels in all areas of his life. Had some I-A offers. We certainly beat some really good schools on him. Coach Belin did a really good job down there on him in getting him and his family on board. He’s got a chance to be a really good player.“

SCOTT HYLAND
Position: Linebacker

Coach Danny Rocco’s take

“He’s really had an outstanding career. He’s played some fullback also. We’re going to play him at linebacker here. He’s just a guy who does a lot of things on film. He played in a defense that we play here. So there’s a lot of carryover from what he did at LCA to what he’s going to do here defensively. He is a great example of what I was talking about earlier. Championship program. Great character. Internally motivated. I mean, this kid will be frothing at the mouth to get here and start competing and playing.“

ANDREW JAUCH

Coach Danny Rocco’s take

“Andrew comes from a football family. His dad, his granddad, his uncle all have college or professional ties. Andrew is one of those guys who is a perfect fit for our defense. He can play corner or safety. He’s a run-and-hit player. And he’s a football player. He grew up around it. He understands it. He has a good sense for it.“

RYAN MICKENS
Position: Running back
Height: 6-0
Weight: 230
Hometown: Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
High School: University Christian

None.

Coach Danny Rocco’s take

“He’s a big, physical back. Really had a great junior year then transferred his senior year and didn’t quite have the statistics. Coming out of his junior year, he was an ACC offer candidate. A couple of ACC schools did indeed extend offers to him. He’s a potential fullback for us. He certainly has the ability to run the ball and block.“

ANDRE MONDOR
Position: Offensive line
Height: 6-4
Weight: 320
Hometown: Tampa, Fla.
High School: H.B. Plant

Coach Danny Rocco’s take

“I think he was a three-year starter down there. Real good get for us. He can play tackle, and we definitely need some developmental tackles in our program.“
