Football signee snippets, part 3
As promised, we’ll take a recruit-by-recruit look at the 18 players who signed national letters of intent Wednesday to play football at Liberty.
Here’s the first part of the series.
Here’s the second part of the series.
BOBBY PARTILLA
Position: Linebacker
Height: 6-1
Weight: 210
Hometown: Gambrills, Md.
High School: Arundel

Coach Danny Rocco’s take
“He’s 6-1, 210, a little leaner than Scott (Hyland). He appears to be a little longer, just because he’s a little lighter. He can run. He’s one of those kind of hybrid players who in theory could play a safety position or an outside linebacker position. Very versatile. He had a really good year up there on their football team. Hard-working kid. Really excited about him.“
GREG RAY
Position: Offensive lineman/defensive lineman
Height: 6-4
Weight: 300
Hometown: Pearisburg
High School: Giles County

Coach Danny Rocco’s take
“Just a tough, tough kid. This kid is a real good get for us. He can play guard or center. We’ve got (Andre) Mondor who can play tackle and then Kevin Widener can be a tight end or a center. So we’ve got some versatility there with those three guys on the offensive line.“
DESMOND RICE
Position: Running back
Height: 5-8
Weight: 190
Hometown: Lynchburg
High School: LCA

Coach Danny Rocco’s take
“I’ve watched Des play for three years. He’s smaller in stature but strong and explosive. He’s just one of those guys who’s a baller. He works hard. He’ll certainly have a role for us here on this football team as we continue to get these running backs to mature and to develop.“
NICK SIGMON
Position: Linebacker
Height: 6-2
Weight: 240
Hometown: Roanoke
High School: Northside
Relevant links
Coach Danny Rocco’s take
“He was a huge get for us. It’s really important for me for us to be able to do well in the state of Virginia and as close to home as we possibly can. We had the two kids at LCA this year, Kenny Scott at Appomattox, and Roanoke’s not in our backyard but I still consider it local with Nick Sigmon. Nick is a Mike linebacker. And in this defense, you can’t really make somebody into a Mike. He’s a Mike. He can do this. He can play it. He reminded me a lot of Manny Rojas when I went in and watched Nick’s highlight film. This guy has all the accolades this year. Championship team. First-team everything you can imagine. Really, really a good player.“
KENNY SCOTT
Position: Defensive back/wide receiver
Height: 5-10
Weight: 165
Hometown: Appomattox
High School: Appomattox

Coach Danny Rocco’s take
“I fell in love with Kenny when I went over there to see him not too long ago. He was a quarterback for them. We thought he could be a receiver or a DB. We’re going to start him on defense at DB. Reminds me a lot of Kevin Fogg on our current team right now. Kevin had a great freshman season. Kenny is a solid kid, a competitor, a captain, a leader. And he’s talented. He can play on the corner.“
RANDY SPANN
Position: Defensive back
Height: 5-11
Weight: 205
Hometown: Glen Burnie, Md.
High School: Old Mill
Relevant links
Coach Danny Rocco’s take
“This kid can run and hit now. He’s kind of a hybrid between a linebacker and safety. He actually played more linebacker in high school. But he’s athletic. He came to our camp. We evaluated him in the camp and I thought he could play in the secondary. Really impressive video tape. He runs and hits. We’re really excited about him.“
MATT STOKES
Position: Defensive line
Height: 6-2
Weight: 225
Hometown: Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
High School: St. Thomas Aquinas

UMass has some interest in Stokes
Coach Danny Rocco’s take
“His brother Chris played for us at fullback and tight end. Chris is coaching over at LCA. Matt is a physical, tough, hard-nosed player. He’s going to have to put on some mass to play on the defensive line for us. But he’ll certainly get that done.“
KEVIN WIDENER
Position: Tight end
Height: 6-4
Weight: 260
Hometown: Lebanon
High School: Lebanon

Coach Danny Rocco’s take
“Another kid who was on a championship-caliber team this year. I think he’ll be a tight end but he has some versatility to maybe be an offensive lineman or even a defensive lineman. One of the bigger bodies in this particular class.“
J’COURTNEY WILLIAMS
Position: Linebacker
Height: 6-2
Weight: 225
Hometown: Christchurch
High School: Christchurch (El Camino CC)
Relevant links
Coach Danny Rocco’s take
“J’Courtney actually committed to me as a junior when I was recruiting for UVa. ... He was pretty good. He was certainly one of Virginia’s marquee signees that year. ... We had some connections. I know Larry Claiborne had a relationship with J’Courtney. I don’t know how close they were. I had a relationship with J’Courtney because I recruited him to Virginia. Coach (Levern) Belin was coaching at Virginia when he was there. I don’t remember how or when we got the first inclination that this boy was out there again. But quickly, we were able to respond to that and move forward.“
“For us, he can play a couple of different things—linebacker, safety. We’ll have to wait until he gets here to see.“
