Quick-hit notes:
—The Reds promoted Hillcats closer Donnie Joseph to Double-A Carolina today in advance of the Mudcats’ series with Mobile. In the last week, the Cats’ most effective relievers—Joseph and Justin Freeman—have been promoted to Carolina. I’m not sure who will get save opportunities from here on out for the Hillcats, but just taking a guess, it might be either Nick Christiani or Andrew Bowman. They each have three save opportunities. Christiani is 1-for-3, Bowman 0-for-3. RHP Blair Carson was promoted to Lynchburg to fill Joseph’s roster spot.
—Some leftover stuff from last night. Hillcats starter Josh Ravin’s start was in a word ... weird. His line wasn’t bad. He only last 4 1/3 innings, allowing three hits, two runs (unearned) and three walks. Of his 13 outs, seven were strikeouts, and he’s yet to allow an earned run in two starts in Lynchburg. His defense didn’t help at all last night, as Michael Jones reached on a two-out error by Shane Carlson in the first inning, giving Cody Johnson a chance to bat with runners in scoring position. Of course, he made Ravin pay with a two-run double. Johnson still finished with a hat trick, striking out in each of his next three at-bats, but he’s proven to be fairly dangerous since his return to the Carolina League.
The Hillcats didn’t allow an earned run all night, actually. In the ninth inning, Cole Miles hit a one-out, two-run single to left that scored Samuel Sime and L.V. Ware. But the runs were unearned because of Neftali Soto’s fielding error that allowed Ware to reach base at all and allowed Sime to get to third. The infield was playing in on Miles’ hit to shallow left, and Sime wouldn’t have scored from second. Miles was caught stealing second and Mycal Jones flew out to left to end the inning, and the runs then remained unearned.
—Mycal Jones is batting .407 with a home run, three doubles, four RBIs and seven runs scored in seven games against the Hillcats.
—Neither team has taken batting practice outside at any point during this four-game set because of afternoon rain in the area. The Pelicans are out taking infield right now, though.
