Quick notes:

—The Hillcats aren’t quite out of the playoff race yet, but a great homestand will be a must if they want to stay in it. They enter this seven-game home run (four against the Dash, three against Wilmington) four games behind Potomac in the Northern Division. Frederick won the first half title and has already clinched a playoff berth. Lynchburg and Potomac don’t play again this season, and the Hillcats would probably have to—at worst—go 10-4 in the final 14 games. If Potomac plays .500 ball the rest of the way, the Hillcats would have to go 11-3 just to catch them. This isn’t out of the realm of possibility, as Lynchburg has been the Carolina League’s hottest team of late.

—The problem, though, for the Hillcats is the pitching staff. It’s been completely decimated by injuries and promotions. The rotation, as it stands, is as follows:

* Josh Ravin (tonight’s starter)
* Justin Walker
* Pedro Villarreal
* Curtis Partch
* Spot starter du jour. Sunday it was Ezequiel Infante. Friday, it could be Chase Ware.

Of the four known starters, three were in Dayton recently, and Partch has just now started to emerge from a season-long funk. Going on a run with that staff won’t be easy.

—Though the Hillcats won two out of three from the Dash in Winston-Salem last month, the Dash still leads the season series 10-2, and Lynchburg finishes with eight of those 14 against the Dash.

—The last time Winston-Salem was here, a fan tried to throw a pitcher of beer on Winston-Salem’s Seth Loman and Nick Christiani began a bench-clearing incident by plunking Ozzie Lewis with a 3-0 pitch with the bases loaded.

—The Hillcats’ Cody Puckett has homered in four straight games and is now two home runs shy of his career high of 19, set last year in Dayton. He enters the series with 39 doubles, one shy of Potomac’s Tyler Moore for the Carolina League lead.

—There are six Jose Martinez’s playing minor-league baseball, but the Dash’s Martinez is the only one playing above the rookie-league level.

—There are only two players named Gilmore playing minor-league ball—Winston-Salem’s Jon and the AZL Dodgers’ Chance Gilmore, who you’ll remember is the son of Coastal Carolina baseball coach Gary Gilmore.

—Minor League Baseball president and CEO Pat O’Conner is at City Stadium tonight taking in the action. According to Hillcats general manager Paul Sunwall, it’s been at least 15 years since a MiLB president has visited Lynchburg.

—The last time Winston-Salem was here, the Dash were flirting with a .300 team batting average. That average has gone down to .287, which still ranks sixth in all of MiLB behind AAA Albuquerque (.299), AAA Las Vegas (.297), Hi-A High Desert (.296), AA Northwest Arkansas (.289) and Hi-A San Jose (.289).

—An interesting name on the Dash roster: RHP Jeff Sues. Ardent Hillcat fans will remember that Sues was once one of the top prospects in the Pittsburgh system, and that Sues spent a small chunk of the 2008 season pitching for the Hillcats. The Pirates released him earlier this season, and the White Sox signed him and assigned him to Winston-Salem. He’s made one appearance for the Dash, allowing two hits and an earned run while walking two and striking out one in 1 1/3 innings.
