Hillcats notes, 4/21

And I say scheduled because it has been raining intermittently this afternoon. Just took a peek at the radar, and there’s one last band in Franklin County that could sneak through here, but after that, it looks clear. The teams don’t meet again in Lynchburg until June 9-11, and a getaway doubleheader tomorrow wouldn’t exactly be the most ideal of situations. Tarp is still down as of 4:22 p.m., though.

Some things worth noting:

* Hillcats 2B Jose De Los Santos was placed on the disabled list Monday with a stiff back. Hillcats manager P.J. Forbes said it was a muscle tweak in the side of his back, and that the injury occurred while running the bases last Thursday night against Winston-Salem. The DL in the minors is a 7-day DL, not a 15-day one like the majors, so De Los Santos should be back by the weekend. Eddie Prasch, who had never played second base before last weekend, his another start tonight there. Alex Presley will lead off for the third time in the last four games.

* Ronald Uviedo, who was supposed to start tonight, has been moved back to tomorrow. Dustin Molleken, usually a reliever, will get the nod in Game 2 tonight against a Keys pitcher yet to be named. Justin Wilson will start the opener for Lynchburg opposite Pedro Beato, who was once one of the Orioles’ more touted prospects but has slipped down the list after a poor showing last year. Beato, a righthander, was the No. 9 prospect in the Baltimore organization prior to last season. Now he’s the No. 21 prospect. He struggled to a 4-10 mark with a 5.85 ERA in 19 starts in Frederick last season. Baseball America describes Beato as “the biggest enigma in the organization.“ His velocity was down when he left spring training last year, and the O’s were so concerned about it that they shut him down for a period in May to have him checked out. Doctors found no physical issues, though. Beato was 1-2 with a 3.72 ERA in four starts against the Hillcats last year.

* It was an odd weekend for Hillcats closer R.J. Rodriguez, who appeared in three straight games but was promptly re-assigned to the Pirates’ extended spring training facility Saturday. On Friday, Tom Boleska was put on the DL with elbow soreness (“precautionary,“ Forbes said) and the Pirates assigned Mike Colla to Lynchburg from EST to take Boleska’s place. The next day, the Pirates acquired Michael Dubee in a trade with the White Sox, and to open a spot for Dubee in Lynchburg, Rodriguez was sent down. But when De Los Santos went on the DL, Rodriguez was back in Lynchburg. No word on who will go down when De Los Santos returns from the DL. The best guess would be Colla, who allowed four hits and two earned runs in two innings in his only Lynchburg appearance.

To read more about Dubee, check out today’s story in the N&A.

* Speaking of prospects, I’m heading down soon to talk to Brian Matusz, the No. 3 rated prospect in the Baltimore organization. Look for a story on him in tomorrow’s N&A. Matusz was considered the best college pitcher in last year’s draft and much like Pittsburgh’s Pedro Alvarez, he waited until the last minute to sign a major-league deal with the Baltimore organization. He won’t pitch here this week (he started Sunday at Salem). If Matusz is still with the Keys when Frederick returns here in June, there’s a small chance he could start one of the three games. The current rotation has him starting June 11 in the finale of a three-game set. But projecting that far is treacherous, with injuries, call-ups, rainouts, etc.
