Hillcats notes, 5/17
Hillcat pitchers are on the field throwing long toss, but the tarp is still on the field and will be for some time. The start could be delayed for an hour, or the game could be called altogether. That last scenario is unlikely, though. Wilmington doesn’t come back to Lynchburg in the first half of the season, so I’m sure Lynchburg manager P.J. Forbes is reticent to give up another home game. He’s already lost one to Myrtle Beach.
Couple of loose ends to tie up from last night’s game, a 6-5 Wilmington victory:
* Lynchburg starter Paul Mildren had his longest outing of the season, going six innings and leaving with a 5-2 lead. Wilmington was able to hit him, racking up eight base hits. But Mildren didn’t walk people and worked out of trouble on several occasions. Mildren hasn’t walked a batter in his last three starts, and his command has been good. The biggest problem for him, according to Hillcats broadcaster Scott Bacon, is his inability to close batters out once he gets up 0-2. Mildren threw a slick changeup Saturday that kept batters off balance.
* Matt Hague slammed a two-run homer in the first inning Saturday, his second dinger in three games after going homerless in his first 110 at-bats.
* Tough night for reliever Chris Cullen, who has been sneaky good out of the bullpen for the Cats this season. Cullen signed with the Pirates after a stint in independent ball in Edmonton last season and has been mostly reliable. But he allowed four hits and two earned runs in two innings Saturday. His catcher, Kris Watts, didn’t help his cause, allowing the game-tying run in the eighth on a passed ball.
