Hillcats notes, 7/30
Lineups first on Christmas in July night at the ballpark. There’s a jazzy Muzak version of “O Christmas Tree” playing in the background. I’m serious.

—The trade talk ... the Pirates pulled in another haul of prospects in the last few days by trading reliever John Grabow and AAA pitcher Tom Gorzelanny to the Chicago Cubs; SS Jack Wilson to the Mariners; and 2B Freddy Sanchez to the Giants. The two Hillcats’ followers should be concerned with:
* 3B Josh Harrison (pictured above), who was the third player in the Grabow-Gorzelanny deal and will be assigned to Lynchburg, according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette beat man Dejan Kovacevic. Harrison spent much of the season at Chicago’s Low-A Midwest League club in Peoria (Ill.) and finished his time there with a tasty line—.337 BA, 17 2B, 7 3B, 4 HR, 33 RBIs, 16 SB and only 25 Ks in 303 at-bats. He moved to the Cubs’ High-A club in the Florida State League, and in 70 at-bats in Daytona, he hit .286 with 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 9 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in just 18 games. The Hillcats have been playing with a hodgepodge of Eddie Prasch, Angel Gonzalez and Jose De Los Santos, so I assume he’ll be the Hillcats starter at third base going forward. Harrison was not among the Cubs’ top 30 prospects in Baseball America’s preseason handbook.
EDIT: Just read Pirates’ GM Neal Huntington’s comments in Kovacevic’s blog, and Huntington said the Pirates are interested in developing Harrison as a second baseman.

* RHP Nathan Adcock, who I hear will show up at City Stadium tonight at some point, as long as the Atlanta airport cooperates. Adcock opened the year ranked No. 24 on Seattle’s list of prospects. A right-handed pitcher, he’ll be inserted into the Lynchburg rotation right away. Adcock’s numbers in High-A High Desert of the California League: (Note that High Desert, located at about 4,000 feet in Adelanto, Calif., is considered to have one of the worst pitcher’s parks in all of baseball.)—5-7, 5.29 ERA, 54 BB, 71 K in 102 innings.
Quick hit Baseball America scouting report on Adcock: “Adcock’s hard, sharp downer curveball ranks as the system’s finest breaking ball, but he has to hit his spots with his average 88-92 mph fastball because the pitch it straight. At 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds, he oozes projection and his delivery and arm action both are textbook, so he might gain velocity as he matures. Adcock will flash a quality changeup at times. Because his mound presence has come into question, some questions exist as to whether he’ll reach his ceiling as a No. 4 starter.“
With this influx of minor-league talent, I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole organization didn’t look drastically different soon. Lots of new moveable parts. It’ll be fun to see where all of those parts land.
Quick hitters on the game:
—Bryan Morris is only making his second start against Frederick. His numbers—0-0, 4.50 ERA, 6 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, .308 BAA
—Nate Nery is making his fifth start against the Hillcats. His numbers against Lynchburg—0-1, 3.71 ERA, 17 IP, 18 H, 7 ER, 1 HR, 1 HB, 5 BB, 14 K, .257 BAA
—Hillcats OF Erik Huber is hitting .545 against Frederick this year, including last week’s six-hit game in Maryland.
—SS Jordy Mercer is struggling against the Keys—.193, 0 HR, 8 RBIs, 9 Ks.
—Frederick C Caleb Joseph against Lynchburg—.409, 2 HR, 11 RBIs in 44 AB.
That’s it for now.
