Now some news:

—The Pirates released LHP Chi-Hung Cheng today. Cheng was one of the Hillcats’ most consistent pitchers, going 7-3 with a 4.16 ERA. In 84 1/3 IP, he allowed 98 hits, walked 23 and struck out 39. But as always, it’s not necessarily a numbers game in minor-league baseball. Cheng didn’t project to be much of a prospect long-term, and with more and more pitching depth coming in via trades, Cheng was viewed as expendable. He doesn’t throw very hard and is quite hittable if his sinker isn’t working. Cheng was on the disabled list (though it was a phantom DL move).

—It’s a piggyback night here for the Hillcats, as Uviedo will be limited to four innings and Nathan Adcock, who came over in the Jack Wilson trade, is expected to throw four innings after Uviedo.

—As mentioned yesterday, Rudy Owens, who dominated in the South Atlantic League, will get the start tomorrow when the Hillcats visit Kinston. Owens is one of two pitchers in the Pirates’ organization with 10 victories this season. Triple-A pitcher Daniel McCutchen is the other.

—The Hillcats have already won the season series with Frederick, taking 13 of the first 18 games.

That’s it for tonight.
