Layer new Liberty MBB coach

The search to find Ritchie McKay’s successor has ended.

Liberty athletics director Jeff Barber has called a 4 p.m. press conference at the Williams Football Operations Center to announce the hiring of the program’s eighth men’s basketball coach. McKay, who spent two years at Liberty and led the Flames to a Division I school-record tying 23 victories this season, left last week to become the associate head coach on Tony Bennett’s staff at Virginia.

EDIT, 3:06 p.m.: Liberty’s athletics communications office confirms Layer is the choice.

Layer and Barber have already met with the team, and team members are expected to be in attendance at the press conference.

The five known candidates for the position were Layer, Liberty assistant coach Brad Soucie, Charlotte assistant coach Rob Moxley, Oklahoma assistant coach Mark Cline and Virginia Tech assistant coach Ryan Odom.
