—Here’s the Liberty-Gardner-Webb game preview from today’s News & Advance.
—And check out Nathan Warters’ story on the Flames-George Mason basketball game last night.
Shot a few pics at the stadium before the game. Here’s a quick tour of GWU’s Spangler Stadium, and a look inside its football facility.
A giant Gardner-Webb logo greets you as you step off the elevator in the press box.
The scoreboard at the South end of the stadium.
The Bermuda grass field here is in much better shape than in years past, when the grass was so dead that the school had to pain portions of it green. I walked on the field before the game, and the turf is dry and springy. Should be a fast track.
A look up at the home stands and the press box facility, which is one of the nicest in the Big South, right up there with Coastal Carolina’s.
Feels like home, I suppose, though the fountain spray isn’t quite as high as the one on the James River in downtown Lynchburg.
Gardner-Webb coaches were hosting recruits pre-game, so I didn’t want to bust in on them. But the weight facility here is pretty good for a school this size. The football building as a whole is top notch.
Woof.
This is just a cool photo hanging in a lounge area on the third floor of the press facility.

About an hour to go until kickoff here, just enough time for a few extra notes:
1. Liberty DE Daryl Robertson has a torn LCL in his knee, but he’s going to play through it. As far as knee ligaments go, the LCL is probably the least serious in terms of injuries. So he’ll be able to wrap it up and play through it. DL/LB Terry Adams was feared to have a broken thumb, but it turns out it’s just bruised, so he’ll go. Asa Chapman (knee) also is set to play. RB B.J. Hayes (shoulder) is doubtful, and I don’t see him on the field dressed for warmups. The three running backs out there now are Aldreakis Allen, SirChauncey Holloway and Danny Broggin.
1a. Gardner-Webb will be without LB Jeffery Williams and DB Chris James, both of whom were injured last week at Coastal Carolina. The Bulldogs really don’t have the depth to make up for the loss of such talented players, so those are huge blows for Gardner-Webb. GWU is still without RB Phillip Peoples, who has missed the last few games with an injury.
2. The Big South soccer tournament moved from High Point to Gardner-Webb due to the rainstorm that soaked the U.S. 29 corridor this past week. Liberty beat UNC Asheville 1-0 Friday to advance to a semifinal match at 7 p.m. against Radford. The field is just on the other side of the football stadium here. The championship match is tomorrow at 2 p.m.
3. Gardner-Webb’s James Perry III enters today’s game with the Big South lead in receptions (46).
4. Gardner-Webb leads the series 8-6-1 but the Flames have won the last two meetings by a combined score of 61-10.
5. If Liberty wins today, it would double the previous top Big South win streak, which Coastal Carolina set by winning eight straight league contests.
6. Liberty has also won six straight league road games.
7. Liberty is on a five-game win streak, its third five-game run under Danny Rocco. Liberty had two five-game win streaks under Ken Karcher (the last four games of 2003 and the opener in 2004; the last four games of 2004 and the opener of 2005), and prior to that, its previous five-game win streak came in 1992-93, when the Flames won the last three games of 92 and the first three of 93.
8. The “temporary” press box at Williams Stadium will begin coming down next week sometime. I say temporary because originally, it was supposed to be a temporary facility when it was built in 1989.
9. Against Coastal, Gardner-Webb allowed 473 yards, and Coastal was successful on 12 of 18 third downs and its only fourth down.
