Liberty-Presbyterian game blog

Little late to the party today. Needed to make a few last minute costume pickups and I got locked into an intense NCAA 10 battle in the ACC championship game and lost track of time. I’m a dork. I know that.

Anyway, I’ll post in-game updates on Twitter.

Quick observations about an hour before kickoff:

1. Presbyterian will start Tim Webb at quarterback today, according to PC media relations guru Brent Hager. Brandon Miley, who played the game of his life against Liberty last season in Clinton, S.C., will also play. Webb, if you’ll remember, has had a lot of hard luck with injuries, and he suffered a broken neck on this field two years ago. Great kid, though, and I’m glad to see him back up and playing well for the Hose.

2. As was noted Thursday, Liberty S Larry Claiborne won’t play. Chuck Duffey, a senior who has bounced back and forth between the receiving corps and the secondary, will start opposite Chris Rocco at safety. Brent Vinson will see the field plenty, though. He’s played very well of late.

3. Not sure what to expect crowd wise here today. It looks like it might rain, and that tends to keep crowds away from Williams Stadium.

4. Remember how Danny Rocco called last week’s game at Charleston Southern a “human nature game?“ Well, Richmond’s having one now, losing in the third quarter at Towson. Wow.

4a. Never mind, Richmond just scored to go up 21-14 in the middle of the third. Still, this was a game I’m sure Richmond’s fan base expected to win handily. Any given Saturday and what not ...

4c. Wow. OK, UR’s up 21 now. The Spidahs have awoken.

5. James Madison is up two touchdowns at Delaware, which would essentially eliminate the Hens from the playoff conversation and boost Liberty’s strength of schedule.

5a. FINAL—JMU 20, Delaware 8. Good night, Hens.

6. I don’t think any one Flames running back will have a great statistical day rushing, but I’d expect quite a few players to get involved, and the team numbers will look good at the end of the day. PC is allowing 250.1 yards per game on the ground.

7. I asked Rocco Thursday about focus, and his response was: “I’d be shocked if we didn’t play well this week.“

He then added: “But I’ve been surprised before.“

8. Look, I’m pretty sure I underestimated Charleston Southern last week as much as anyone else. But PC REALLY doesn’t have much of a shot here today. Way too young. Way too inexperienced. Way too undermanned. And I just don’t see any way the Flames play with lackluster effort today. Only two home games left, and the seniors are acutely aware of that.

That’s all for now.
