Liberty at VMI MBB pregame

We’re live tonight from Cameron Hall in Lexington for a little Tuesday Big South basketball. The BracketBusters event this weekend forced the conference to switch some games around, so the usual Thursday-Saturday schedule in the league this week is scrapped.

First, your lineups:

LIBERTY (19-8, 13-2 Big South)
Jesse Sanders (G, 6-3, 200)  10.9 ppg/6.3 rpg
Evan Gordon (G, 6-2, 185)  15.2/2.9
David Minaya (G, 6-6, 205)  11.4/3.4
John Brown (G, 6-4, 195)  11.2/10.6
Joel Vander Pol (C, 6-10, 225)  4.1/3.3

VMI (14-11, 7-8 Big South)
Rodney Glasgow (G, 5-10, 170)  10.4/2.7
Austin Kenon (G, 5-11, 180)  17.1/3.2
Stan Okoye (F, 6-5, 205)  17.5/8.4
Ron Burks (F, 6-4, 215)  10.2/5.1
D.J. Covington (C, 6-9, 235)  8.8/4.9

Thoughts, notes, etc. ...

1. Big news out of Radford today, as Highlanders coach Brad Greenberg was suspended for the rest of the season for NCAA rules violations. Here’s a link to Ray Cox’s story in today’s Roanoke Times.

2. For Liberty fans, the scoreboard watching over the next few weeks should really focus on who finishes 7th, because the Flames will be the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament when it opens on March 1. Coastal Carolina isn’t losing to Gardner-Webb tonight at home, so the Chanticleers will wrap up the No. 1 seed. Your most likely candidates for the No. 7? High Point, VMI and Charleston Southern. The UNC Asheville-CSU game tonight is a big one for the Bucs. If they can win that one, they’ll likely finish no worse than 9-9, which should put them in the mix for a seed in the top six. High Point has Winthrop tonight at home, and the Panthers probably need to get that one to have any chance of escaping seventh.

3. This is VMI’s final home game, and the Keydets finish next week with the same road trip that Liberty does (at Winthrop/Presbyterian). Asheville finishes with home games against Radford and High Point but it must make a Tuesday trip to Coastal Carolina next week.

4. VMI has never beaten Liberty when Jesse Sanders has played a full game. The Keydets’ two wins since Sanders has been here came in a 37-point rout at the Vines Center when Sanders was out with an ankle injury, and in the Big South tournament semifinals two weeks later when Sanders played just nine minutes before re-injuring the ankle.

5. Jeremy Anderson has had some of his biggest games in his career at Cameron Hall, including a 20-point game two years ago in which he went 6-for-8 from 3-point range.

6. Liberty has won the last four meetings inside Cameron Hall.

7. The Flames are vying for the sixth 20-win season in program history.

8. Liberty’s Jesse Sanders is 42 assists away from the 500-mark for his career, which would make him the fourth player in Flames history to hit the milestone. The others: Karl Hess (648), Matt Hildebrand (583) and Kenny Gunn (535).

9. Weird stat of the night: Liberty is undefeated when controlling the tip, but the Flames have only won the tip eight times in 27 games this season.

10. Your shooters to watch:
a. Liberty’s top 3-point threats: Evan Gordon (60-178, 33.7 percent); David Minaya (21-59, 35.6); John Caleb Sanders (32-86, 37.2); Jeremy Anderson (15-50, 30.0).
b. VMI’s top 3-point threats: Stan Okoye (26-71, 36.6); Austin Kenon (67-166, 40.4); Keith Gabriel (53-167, 31.7); Rodney Glasgow (40-107, 37.4); Ron Burks (24-72, 33.3); Michael Sparks (45-132, 34.1); Nick Gore (22-69, 31.9).
c. Liberty’s top free-throw shooters: Gordon (78-103, 75.7); Minaya (60-79, 75.9); Jesse Sanders (102-135, 75.6); Antwan Burrus (43-60, 71.7); Chene Phillips (20-23, 87.0).
d. VMI’s top free-throw shooters: Kenon (88-105, 83.8); Glasgow (50-68, 73.5); Burks (31-42, 73.8).
e. Liberty’s worst free-throw shooters: John Brown (37-64, 57,8); Joel Vander Pol (37-63, 58.7)
f. VMI’s worst free-throw shooters: Okoye (86-125, 68.8); Gabriel (61-99, 61.6); D.J. Covington (29-45, 64.4); Sparks (27-44, 61.4); Gore (21-35, 60.0).
