Liberty football notes, 9/3
OK folks, just two days until game day, which can’t get here soon enough. Players love to talk about how they’re sick of hitting each other for a month during a practice. Writers will tell you they’re sick of writing about practice. I’m about out of preseason ideas here. Time to get some answers to the all of the questions raised about this team in the preseason.
Some links for your reading pleasure:
* West Virginia’s young offensive line will surprise people, the Charleston Daily Mail’s Mike Casazza writes.
* The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Colin Dunlap reminds Mountaineer fans that anything can happen.
* West Virginia’s season is in Jarrett Brown’s hands, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review’s Tony Dobies writes.
* The Flames are pinning their hopes on their offensive line, the Charleston Gazette’s Dave Hickman writes.
* In case you missed it in today’s print edition of the News & Advance, here’s my story on Liberty’s Ian Childress regaining a year of eligibility.
Some quick notes. I’ll update after practice if anything noteworthy happens. As of Wednesday, no new injuries had cropped up:
* Those who want to experience the Flames’ new video screen at Williams Stadium will have a chance to do so Saturday. Liberty will stream the WSET broadcast of the LU-West Virginia game at noon, according to the Flames’ athletics communications staff. No food, drink or gum is allowed on the FieldTurf for those who want to watch the game at field level.
* Bill Stewart’s 10-4 start at West Virginia is the third best 14-game start for a coach in WVU history, behind Ira Errett Rodgers (13-1 in 1925-26) and Carl Forkum (11-3 in 1905-06). Stewart is tied at 10-4 with Bobby Bowden and Dudley DeGroot.
* West Virginia is tied for 10th in FBS football in wins in the last six seasons (58). Utah also has 58. Southern California leads the category with 71 victories, followed by Boise State (68).
