Liberty football practice update

Asa Chapman’s return from minor off-season knee surgery lasted all of one afternoon.

Liberty’s massive defensive lineman tweaked his left knee last Thursday in practice and left the Williams Stadium turf early. The team went through its first day of two-a-days on Tuesday, and Chapman was not dressed. Instead, he walked the sideline in street clothes with a large brace running from his knee to his ankle, aided by a crutch.

Flames coach Danny Rocco said Chapman re-aggravated the meniscus injury that necessitated the knee surgery to begin with, and that his status for Liberty’s Sept. 3 opener at North Carolina State is “questionable.”

“We kind of thought he was back where he needed to be, and then he had a setback here on the first day of camp,” Rocco said. “We’re certainly disappointed, but we’re hopeful Asa can make a full recovery.”

Players normally take three to six weeks to recover from meniscus injuries. Chapman, a 6-foot-5, 380-pound nose guard, was a first-team all-Big South selection last year and was a preseason second-team All-America pick by The Sports Network.

—All-American receiver Chris Summers left practice Monday with an injured right pectoral and didn’t dress for Tuesday’s practices. Rocco said he’ll know more about Summers’ status when results of an MRI come in.

Summers hurt his chest during the summer in weight-room workouts.

Three other players practiced Tuesday but wore red limited-contact jerseys. Linebackers Jimmy O’Grady and Nick Sigmon both are nursing shoulder stingers, and receiver Greg Pratt was dealing with a head issue. All three players practice on a limited basis in the afternoon session.

—Safety Larry Claiborne, who tied for fourth on the team last year with 40 tackles, did not return to school for the 2011 season. Rocco said Claiborne was dealing with “personal hardship.” With Claiborne off the roster, Georgia Tech transfer Ryan Ayers and North Carolina Central transfer Jeffrey Henderson are battling for playing time at free safety.

—Former Liberty pitcher Andrew Wilson, who has spent the entire season with the Lynchburg Hillcats, has been promoted to Double-A Mississippi and will travel today to Pearl, Miss., to begin play with the M-Braves.

Wilson pitched three innings for the Hillcats Monday against Kinston and earned his second victory of the season. In 34 appearances for Lynchburg, he went 2-3 with five saves and posted a 2.68 ERA. In 47 innings, he allowed 41 hits, 14 earned runs, 13 walks and struck out 51 batters. Opponents batted .228 against him.

Wilson was a 39th-round pick of the Braves in 2009 and began his career with the rookie-league GCL Braves before advancing to Low-A Rome for two appearances at the end of the 2009 season. He split time between Atlanta’s affiliates in Rome and Myrtle Beach last season.
