Liberty’s at-large case

Now, the wait. Coastal Carolina beat Liberty 8-2 Saturday to clinch the Big South tournament title and undoubtedly, a national seed for the upcoming NCAA regionals.

ESPN.com, Baseball America and SEBaseball.com each released NCAA regional projections this week, and ESPN and BA each had Liberty in the field as an at-large candidate. SEBaseball’s latest projection was updated today, and it has Liberty among the last 10 out of the field.

Here’s a closer look at the last five teams in and the last 10 out in SEBaseball’s projections:

LAST FIVE IN
ELON
Record 38-21
RPI 47
vs. RPI Top 50 10-8
Outlook The Phoenix went 1-2 in the Southern Conference tournament, losing twice to top seed The Citadel. The RPI isn’t terribly high, but of the 15 teams we’re discussing here, only California has more wins against the RPI top 50. The Phoenix beat Liberty twice in non-conference play.

CALIFORNIA
Record 28-22
RPI 38
vs. RPI Top 50 11-16
Outlook The Pac-10 does not hold a conference tournament, so the Bears are finishing the regular season this weekend at Oregon. The record is poor, but the 11 wins against Top 50 is tops among bubble teams.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE
Record 37-21
RPI 44
vs. RPI Top 50 9-17
Outlook The Wolfpack can pick up another quality win tonight if they can knock off Virginia Tech at the ACC tournament. State already topped second-seeded Clemson at the tourney. Nine Top 50 wins will probably be enough.

OREGON STATE
Record 30-25
RPI 25
vs. RPI Top 50 10-16
Outlook The Beavers finish up regular-season play at home against Arizona this weekend. The RPI is strong. Couple it with 10 Top 50 wins and the Beavers have a great case.

NORTH CAROLINA
Record 36-20
RPI 20
vs. RPI Top 50 10-15
Outlook Sure, the Tar Heels didn’t make the ACC tournament. But they swept Virginia Tech to end the regular season and won 10 games against the Top 50. I can’t see the committee leaving a team with an RPI of 20 out.

LAST 10 OUT
FLORIDA GULF COAST
Record 38-20
RPI 48
vs. RPI Top 50 2-7
Outlook The Eagles went 1-2 in the Atlantic Sun tournament after winning the league’s regular-season championship. The A-Sun isn’t exactly a power league, so winning the regular-season title probably won’t hold a whole lot of weight with the committee.

FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL
Record 34-23
RPI 56
vs. RPI Top 50 8-8
Outlook The Golden Panthers are still alive in the Sun Belt tournament and eliminated regular-season champ Florida Atlantic from the event. FIU’s 34-23 looks a lot better than Liberty’s 42-19 because of the eight Top 50 wins. The Panthers can steal a bid by winning the tournament.

TEXAS STATE
Record 37-21
RPI 45
vs. RPI Top 50 2-10
Outlook Another regular-season champion, Texas State is still alive in the Southland tournament, going 3-1 in the event so far.

WESTERN CAROLINA
Record 36-20-1
RPI 59
vs. RPI Top 50 7-9-1
Outlook The Catamounts were playing Appalachian State in a SoCon elimination game as I wrote this entry. I would think the Catamounts would have to win the tournament to get in. Despite the seven Top 50 wins, WCU was the No. 6 seed in a non-power conference tournament. WCU winning the SoCon tourney would be bad news for Liberty.

PITTSBURGH
Record 38-18
RPI 54
vs. RPI Top 50 3-5
Outlook Pitt’s hopes ride entirely on taking two of three in the regular season from Louisville, which is ranked 7th in the RPI. The Panthers went 1-2 in the Big East tournament, not the sort of impression a bubble team wants to make.

LIBERTY
Record 42-19
RPI 43
vs. RPI Top 50 0-7
Outlook Of all of the bubble teams, Liberty is the only one without a win over an RPI Top 50 team. The Flames only played three non-conference games against such teams, losing twice to Elon and once to Virginia Tech (an ugly 10-0 blowout). The other four losses came to Coastal Carolina, a juggernaut that won 51 games. I don’t have the experience in prognosticating NCAA baseball fields to know how this will play out. LU has more victories than any potential bubble team, but most of them came against teams ranked 51-200 in the RPI. Coin flip, in my mind. We’ll see Monday.

RUTGERS
Record 30-25
RPI 57
vs. RPI Top 50 2-14
Outlook Rutgers is still alive in the Big East tournament, and if the Scarlet Knights were to win that event, it would be a disaster for the Flames. I can’t see otherwise how a team that’s five games above .500 and is 2-14 against the Top 50 is even in the conversation.

SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA
Record 40-19
RPI 55
vs. RPI Top 50 4-3
Outlook The Lions needed a deeper run in the Southland Tournament. They went 1-2 in the event. Still, SELA was ranked in some of the polls early in the season and won 40 games, but the RPI isn’t great.

SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI
Record 34-22
RPI 70
vs. RPI Top 50 3-6
Outlook The at-large profile isn’t good. But the Golden Eagles will play Rice for the Conference USA tournament title, so LU fans should probably root for the Owls. If Southern Miss wins, that’s another at-large spot that disappears.

WESTERN KENTUCKY
Record 35-23
RPI 42
vs. RPI Top 50 8-9
Outlook The Hilltoppers have a decent at-large profile but went 16-14 in a mid-major league and were the No. 8 seed in the Sun Belt tournament. That’s 14 losses outside of the Top 50. They went 0-2 in the Sun Belt tourney, which probably ended their at-large hopes.
