McKay accepts UVa post

Liberty athletics director Jeff Barber confirmed Wednesday afternoon that head coach Ritchie McKay is leaving to become the associate head coach at Virginia.

McKay told Barber the news Wednesday morning before telling his team and assistant coaches.

“I was totally shocked,“ Barber said.

McKay has not responded to calls, voicemail messages or text messages.

Barber is meeting with the team and assistant coaches later this afternoon. A full story with player reaction will appear in Thursday’s News & Advance.

Barber said he was first made aware Sunday that Bennett was courting McKay.

“But at that time, he was committed to staying on,“ Barber said. “Even as of last night, I didn’t believe he was going to be leaving.“

Barber added that he wished McKay, who led the Flames to a school Division I-record tying 23 victories this season—the best in his new position.

Mark my words God has just unified two people who compliment each other professionally and spiritually better than any two people than I have ever heard of.  And I am a Daryl Hall and John Oates fan.  And a Winans fan for that matter.  Ok Winans is pushing it.  Are you kidding me though.  Offense meets defense.  Three years and somethin’ is gonna’ be brewin’.  Can’t wait.  Good luck guys.

Why is this such a surprise?  This was widely rumoured when Seth Curry left for Duke.
