Saturday baseball update: Game canceled, DH Sunday
Today’s weather update:
Liberty and Charleston Southern were supposed to start at 2 p.m. today. They’ll go at noon instead.
It looks like the teams will have to deal with rain no matter what, so it’s a matter of finding a window in which the rain is light. Looking at the latest radar, it seems the stuff is moving southwest to northeast again, but there’s a dry spot over Franklin County that will move over Lynchburg around noonish. Thus the time change. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some delays, though, during the game.
I asked Liberty third baseman Tyler Bream about playing in the rain and cold yesterday. His response:
“I’m from Pennsylvania, so this is basically all of spring baseball up there. But, yeah, it’s tough. You’ve got to focus in a little bit more. Everything you do hurts—catching balls, hitting balls stings your hands. You’ve just got to stay focused and play the game.“
UPDATE, 12:58 p.m.
Tarp is still down and I’m hearing now that the players are gone and won’t return to the stadium until 4 p.m. They have to get these games in somehow, and the weather really doesn’t want to cooperate at this point.
Tentative start time, according to coach Jim Toman, is now 5 p.m.
Again, according to Big South rules, the series must be completed by Sunday or the games will be canceled.
UPDATE: 5:35 p.m.
Saturday’s game is canceled. The rain hasn’t stopped for a second today, so the teams will try for a doubleheader Sunday starting at noon.
