Tax day grab bag, 4/15
** First off, can you smell what Dale Layer is cooking?
Yeah, I went there. I’ll be here all week. Please tip your waitresses.
The new Liberty basketball coach’s first signing is a 6-foot-5 wing named Patrick Konan who played his high school ball at The Rock High School in Gainesville, Fla.
Some links on Konan:
** My colleague, Nathan Warters, spoke to Rashad Jennings today and informs me that Jennings will be in town Saturday for the Liberty spring game, which kicks off at 1 p.m. at Williams Stadium. Those looking for an autograph from Jennings or any other Liberty senior from last year should show up early, as the group will be signing before the game.
** Moving on to some Hillcat quickies. Game seven of a season-long eight-game homestand tonight (no score in the bottom of the first, if anyone cares). A few things worth noting ...
—The Pedro Alvarez watch moves into Day 6, as in, it’s been six days since the Pirates’ stop prospect has gotten a hit. The current number is 0-for-18. Alvarez has not been unproductive, if that makes any sense. He’s done a nice job driving in runs with sac flies and ground balls in RBI situations. He’s also drawn five walks in the last two-plus games. He just drilled a ball to right center that Jordan Danks caught at the warning track. Another productive out, though, as Jose De Los Santos moves from second to third on the play.
—Matt Hague has had an interesting start at first base. His batting average (up to date as of 6:30 p.m.) ... .417. His slugging percentage ... .417. That’s right. The Hillcats’ clean-up hitter has 10 hits this season, all singles.
—Shortstop Jordy Mercer was on pace for a 140-error season before going error-free in Tuesday night’s game. He’s 1 for 1 in fielding chances tonight so far.
—Winston-Salem’s Christian Marrero just crushed a home run to right, making him the second opposing Marrero to go yard this homestand. Potomac’s Chris Marrero slammed one to left last Friday. The two are brothers.
That’s all for now.
