The FCS 40: Teams 11-20

The first two parts of this series:

Teams 31-40

Teams 21-30

Now, moving on to the teams in the 11-20 range.

DELAWARE
2009 record: 6-5, 4-4 CAA South, t4th
Last postseason appearance: 2007
Last postseason victory: 2007
Starters returning (offense/defense): 8/8
Players to watch: RB David Hayes (409 yards, 2 TD); RB Leon Jackson (316 yards, 6 TD); QB Pat Devlin (64.0 comp%, 2,664 yards, 16 TD, 9 INT, 127 rush yards, 4 rush TD); WR Mark Mackey (33 rec., 374 yards, 1 TD); MLB Bernard Makumbi (67 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 PBU); DB Anthony Walters (55 tackles, 1 1/2 TFL, 10 PBU, 1 INT).
The skinny: Former Penn State QB Pat Devlin rejuvenated the Blue Hens’ offense after UD struggled through an uncharacteristic 4-8 season in 2008. The Blue Hens average 25.6 ppg, more than eight points better than the previous season. But the Hens, after a 5-2 start, struggled to score down the stretch, as they failed to hit the 20-point mark of three of their last four games. Not surprisingly, they lost all three. With most important skill players back, the Blue Hens should be primed to join the hunt for the CAA title. The schedule is somewhat favorable. They play only four road games, but three of those are against CAA powers Richmond, James Madison and William & Mary. Delaware misses New Hampshire and hosts Villanova in the season finale.

EASTERN ILLINOIS
2009 record: 8-4, 6-2 OVC, 2nd
Last postseason appearance: 2009
Last postseason victory: 1989
Starters returning (offense/defense): 7/8
Players to watch: RB Mon Williams (870 yards, 9 TD), WR Lorence Ricks (19 rec., 381 yards, 3 TD); LB Nick Nasti (83 tackles, 3 1/2 TFL, 1 PBU, 1 INT); CB C.J. James (44 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 1/2 TFL, 4 PBU, 5 INT)
The skinny: The Panthers haven’t won a playoff game in 21 years but they’re always in the hunt for the Ohio Valley auto bid. The Panthers back into the playoffs last season, winning the auto bid despite losing to Tennessee State in the season finale. Had Jacksonville State been eligible, the Gamecocks would have gone to the postseason instead. The big question mark is at quarterback, where Jake Christensen graduated after throwing for 2,204 yards, 19 TDs and 11 INTs. The Panthers are transfer heavy in the backfield. Mon Williams came to EIU after a stint at Florida. Jimmy Potempa transferred in from Florida. The schedule is stout, as the Panthers open at Iowa, host Central Arkasnas, travel to UT Martin and host Jacksonville State in the first four weeks. If they survive that run, they should contend for the OVC title again.

JACKSONVILLE STATE
2009 record: 8-3, 6-1 Ohio Valley, 1st
Last postseason appearance: 2004
Last postseason victory: 2003
Starters returning (offense/defense): 7/6
Players to watch: RB Calvin Middleton (629 yards, 6 TD), WR Alan Bonner (14 rec., 300 yards, 4 TD), ROV Kevin Dix (49 tackles, 4 1/2 sacks, 1 TFL).
The skinny: The Gamecocks’ best chance to make national noise came and went last season as QB Ryan Perrilloux, an LSU transfer, is gone. Perrilloux threw for 2,350 yards and 23 TDs and tossed just two interceptions. JSU also must replace their top two receivers and top two tacklers on defense. JSU last had a losing season in 2002, and the Gamecocks bring enough back on defense to again compete for the OVC crown. They are once again playoff eligible. Marques Ivory looks like the best candidate to take over for Perrilloux at QB.

LIBERTY
2009 record: 8-3
Last postseason appearance: None
Last postseason victory: None
Starters returning (offense/defense): 5/6
Players to watch: QB Mike Brown (60 rec., 698 yards, 2 TD, 70.6 comp%, 427 pass yards, 4 TD, 442 rush yards, 9 TD); WR Chris Summers (46 rec., 603 yards, 4 TD); LB Doncel Bolt (62 tackles, 2 sacks, 4 TFL)
The skinny: The Flames were 55 seconds away from wrapping up a third straight outright Big South title but couldn’t close Stony Brook out on the road. With so many new faces last season, the Flames seemed to arrive a year earlier than anticipated. The only losses were to West Virginia, James Madison in a monsoon and Stony Brook on a busted defensive assignment. Brown is the full-time QB now and Summers is ready for a breakout season as the No. 1 receiver. Liberty led the nation in scoring offense last season, and as long as a dependable running back emerges from the trio of Korrey Davis, SirChauncey Holloway and Chase Barnett, the Flames should be productive again. Liberty was plus-21 in turnover margin last season. The Flames are the favorite to win the Big South and advance to the playoffs for the first time.

McNEESE STATE
2009 record: 9-3, 6-1 Southland, t1st
Last postseason appearance: 2009
Last postseason victory: 2002
Starters returning (offense/defense): 4/10
Players to watch: RB Champlain Babin (395 yards, 5 TD); WR Corday Clark (26 rec., 425 yards, 5 TD); FS Malcom Bronson (67 tackles, 3 1/2 TFL, 4 PBU, 2 INT)
The skinny: The Cowboys, once an FCS power, have been one-and-done in their last four trips to the playoffs. Twice, they were heavy favorites but were blown out by Northern Arizona and Eastern Washington. The offense must retool in every area, as the Cowboys lost QB Derrick Fourroux, who accounted for 25 TDs. A fairly easy early-season schedule should give the offense time to come together. McNeese opens at home against Lamar in the Cardinals’ first game since the 1989 season. McNeese will ride an experienced defense while the offense comes together. The Cowboys return 10 starters from a team that improved defensively last season. The toughest Southland games—against Stephen F. Austin, Texas State and Central Arkansas, are at home.

NEW HAMPSHIRE
2009 record: 10-3, 6-2 CAA, 1st North
Last postseason appearance: 2009
Last postseason victory: 2009
Starters returning (offense/defense): 5/6
Players to watch: QB R.J. Toman (54.4 comp%, 2,181 yards, 15 TD, 11 INT, 251 rush yards, 4 rush TDs), LB Devon Jackson (98 tackles, 3 sacks, 6 TFL, 1 PBU, 0 INT); CB Dino Vasso (76 tackles, 2 TFL, 6 PBU, 5 INT).
The skinny: The Wildcats have earned six straight FCS playoff berths and have only lost their first-round game once in that span, falling at Northern Iowa in 2007. Though Toman returns, the Wildcats replace RB Chad Kackert, TE Scott Sicko (the team’s top receiver) and K Tom Manning, who nailed a 54-yard field goal last season. UNH has won five straight games against FBS teams, a streak that will be tested heavily this season as the Wildcats travel to Pittsburgh. In the revamped CAA, UNH avoids Delaware but plays James Madison and Villanova on the road. One of UNH’s “home” CAA games, against Massachusetts, was moved to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. UNH will likely be in the playoff hunt, but contending for the conference title will be tough.

NORTHERN ARIZONA
2009 record: 5-6, 4-4 Big Sky, t5th
Last postseason appearance: 2003
Last postseason victory: 2003
Starters returning (offense/defense): 6/8
Players to watch: QB Michael Herrick (66.3 comp%, 3,356 yards, 22 TD, 8 INT), DE Isaac Bond (49 tackles, 8 1/2 sacks, 2 1/2 TFL, 4 PBU, 1 INT), S Matt Estrada (78 tackles, 1 INT), DB Daivon Dumas (56 tackles, 1 sack, 2 TFL, 5 PBU).
The skinny: The Lumberjacks lost their last four games in each of the last two seasons, a disturbing trend for a team with as much talent as NAU possesses. The Lumberjacks must find a new every-down tailback after the departure of Alex Henderson, and they’ll be breaking in new receivers. But QB Michael Herrick, an Ole Miss transfer, is one of the best in the country. The schedule is manageable this season, especially at the end. NAU finishes with three of four at home and the only road trip is to Northern Colorado, traditionally one of the Big Sky’s worst teams. NAU should have a good shot at its first playoff appearance in seven years.

RICHMOND
2009 record: 11-2, 7-1 CAA, t1st in South
Last postseason appearance: 2009
Last postseason victory: 2009
Starters returning (offense/defense): 3/4
Players to watch: RB Garrett Wilkins (282 yards, 2 TD); WR Tre Gray (51 rec., 713 yards, 4 TD); OLB Patrick Weldon (94 tackles, 1 sack, 4 1/2 TFL, 5 PBU, 2 INT)
The skinny: The Spiders not only lost coach Mike London to Virginia, but they lost the core of a team that won one FCS championship and advanced to the quarterfinals last season. Latrell Scott, who at 34 is the youngest head coach in Division I, was the assistant head coach at UR in 2006 and has experience recruiting to the school, which will play at Robins Stadium on campus for the first time this season. The Spiders open against London’s new team, Virginia, before hosting Elon and Delaware. Going even 1-2 in that stretch will be difficult. UR didn’t draw easy CAA road games either, as it heads to New Hampshire, Villanova and William & Mary. Richmond is looking for its fourth straight playoff berth, but it won’t be an easy task.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
2009 record: 8-4, 7-1 Missouri Valley, 2nd
Last postseason appearance: 2009
Last postseason victory: None
Starters returning (offense/defense): 5/7
Players to watch: QB Thomas O’Brien (57.3 comp%, 1,448 yards, 11 TD, 9 INT), RB Kyle Minett (1,304 yards, 16 TD); LB Derek Domino (100 tackles, 2 sacks, 7 TFL, 2 PBU, 5 INT).
The skinny: The Jackrabbits rode a strong defense to their first FCS playoff berth last season. They led 41-14 at Montana in the third quarter before blowing the lead and losing 61-48. Though the Jackrabbits have questions at receiver, they return a workhorse tailback in Minett and a top linebacker in Domino. The schedule is not favorable. SDSU opens at Delaware, hosts MVC darkhorse Illinois State then travels to Nebraska and Northern Iowa. The defense allowed just 13.5 ppg during the regular season before the blowup at Montana, and it should be good again. SDSU will contend for a playoff spot once again.

WOFFORD
2009 record: 3-8, 2-6 Southern, t7th
Last postseason appearance: 2008
Last postseason victory: 2007
Starters returning (offense/defense): 9/8
Players to watch: QB Mitch Allen (43.6 comp%, 605 yards, 7 TD, 6 INT, 633 rush yards, 6 rush TD), RB Mike Rucker (602 yards, 6 TD), LB Keaton Thompson (69 tackles, 4 sacks, 6 1/2 TFL, 1 PBU).
The skinny: Wofford can be forgiven for last year’s blip. The Terriers lost six offensive players and five defensive players to season-ending injuries. The 3-8 record was completely out of character for a program that had been no worse than 6-5 since 2002. The injuries played a huge role, as did turnovers. The Terriers were minus-10 in turnover margin a year after being plus-11 in the category. They were more than 13 points per game worse on offense in 2009 than they were in 2008 and defensively, they allowed nearly 10 more points per game than 2008. Because of all of the injuries, Wofford has experienced depth, and no one will be surprised if Wofford is back in the thick of the SoCon race this season. The Terriers travel to Elon, Samford and Appalachian State, meaning contending for the conference title will be tough.
