Thursday FCS picks, 9/30

Let’s hit the picks for this week. I had a much better week last week than I did the previous week, only missing two games. I should have resisted to urge to pick Eastern Illinois over Jacksonville State. Dumb move there.

And those quick hoop notes. The ESPN BracketBusters field was officially announced today, and nine of the 10 Big South teams will participate in the event, which includes 114 teams nationwide. Coastal Carolina will not be involved, though. The reigning conference regular-season champions are in the field for the Charleston Classic, another ESPN-run event. The network needed a team to fill out the field, and had Coastal participated in the BracketBusters as well, it would have been over the limit for the amount of games a team can play in the regular season. Coastal gets Georgetown in its Charleston Classic opener, which is an infinitely better game than it would have drawn in the BracketBusters anyway.

High Point, Liberty, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville and Winthrop will host games on the weekend of Feb. 18-19. Radford, VMI, Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern will travel for BracketBusters games.

Who could the Flames potentially face? The network tends to organize regional matchups, and unless the Flames greatly exceed expectations (my guess is that Liberty will be picked in the middle of the Big South pack), they probably won’t get one of the TV games. In the past, Liberty has been paired with Niagara (in Buffalo, N.Y.) and Old Dominion. Here are the road teams in the conferences closest to the Big South geographic footprint:

—CAA: Delaware, George Mason, Georgia State, Hofstra, Northeastern, VCU.

Liberty is already playing George Mason at home this season, so that matchup won’t happen.

—MAC: Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Kent State, Miami of Ohio, Ohio

—MEAC: Delaware State

—OVC: Austin Peay, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead State

Murray State is a home team in the field, so there’s no chance of a Liberty-Murray State matchup, which would feature B.J. Jenkins going against his old LU teammates.

—Southern: Appalachian State, Davidson

As in the past, whomever Liberty draws will then host the Flames in the 2011-12 season.
