UNC Asheville-Liberty MBB pre-game

Here at the blog, we’re keeping an eye on two injury developments that will play a huge role in the game between the Flames and the Bulldogs.

First, an update on Kyle Ohman, Liberty’s leading scorer at 15.2 points per game. Ohman fell twice on his left wrist during the Gardner-Webb game Thursday and came out for post-game interviews wearing a splint on his left wrist. Just spoke to Flames coach Dale Layer, who said Ohman is “very, very doubtful” for tonight’s game. Ohman had an MRI Friday and got the results back Saturday, and there is a fracture in the wrist. I need to speak to LU athletics trainer Aaron Schreiner to get the exact wording on the injury. It’s on his non-shooting hand. He shot around at practice Friday and today but he didn’t participate in any contact drills. It sounds like Ohman’s playing status will depend on his pain tolerance.

The team will re-evaluate Ohman after tonight’s game regardless to see how the wrist feels and how well he can play through the pain. So we’ll see what happens.

UNC Asheville’s D.J. Cunningham, who is averaging 8.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, missed Thursday’s game at VMI and is unlikely to play tonight. He injured his leg late in the Bulldogs’ Jan. 9 game against Charleston Southern. The Bulldogs are hoping he can return by next Thursday.

Short blog post today because I have to file a story for the women’s game in between games of a doubleheader today. Check out my Twitter feed for in-game updates and any additional info on Ohman’s injury.
