UVa-Oklahoma super regional, Game 1 pregame
The thermometer in the ol’ stratus read 94 degrees when I pulled into the parking lot, so I can’t even imagine how sweltering it will be down on the field as Virginia and Oklahoma prepare for a 3 p.m. first pitch. I’ll likely go through at least eight bottles of NCAA approved Dasani water. And I’m not even playing.
First, a promo. Follow me on Twitter (@ChrisLangLNA) if you want in-game updates.

Some notes:
—Virginia and Oklahoma have met only once. The Cavaliers won 12-4 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., in a January tournament.
—The Cavaliers’ only other game against a Big 12 opponent was a 4-2 win over Oklahoma State in 1998.
—Of course, the Big 12 is a fluid thing right now, isn’t it? How has Virginia fared against the Pac-10, or the Pac-16? That was a rhetorical question.
—Oklahoma in the polls—11th in Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA, 13th in ESPN/USA Today Coaches.
—Virginia in the polls—1st in Baseball America and NWBCA, 2nd in ESPN/USA Today, 3rd in Collegiate Baseball
—Virginia’s average attendance of 4,154 for the seven games in last weekend’s regional ranked fourth among the 16 regional hosts.
—Virginia’s Cannon is six hits shy of Virginia’s career record. He stands third as of now, one behind David Stone (1999-2002). Bill Narleski (1984-87) holds the school record of 281.
—UVa’ Gosselin needs one hit to break the school’s single-season hit record. He currently shares the mark with Parker at 94 hits.
—Virginia’s win over St. John’s Monday was its school-record 33rd at home. The Cavs are 33-5 at Davenport this season.
—Oklahoma is seeking its 10th College World Series berth and its first since 1995. The Sooners won the championship in 1994.
—OU was 22-9 on the road this season.
—Cameron Seitzer, the son of former major leaguer Kevin Seitzer, hit for the cycle in Oklahoma’s 26-3 win over Ark.-Pine Bluff earlier this season.
—Oklahoma starter Michael Rocha has made just five starts this season, but he started the Big 12 tournament opener against Kansas and the NCAA regional opener against Oral Roberts. Against the Jayhawks, he threw eight innings, allowing five hits and one earned runs while walking two and striking out six. Against ORU, he lasted five innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs while walking two and striking out two. His other three starts were midweek starts against South Florida and Houston Baptist in March and against NCAA super regional team Arkansas on May 18.
—Oklahoma OF Max White was voted a freshman All-American, the eighth in Sooner history.
—Chicago’s “Saturday in the Park” just started playing. Nice.
—The Sooners were 1-4 against the RPI Top 10 this season, beating Arkansas, losing to UCLA and losing three times to Texas.
