Bloggin bout Brookville’s McCray, Thomas and ... Eadie
I checked in with Brookville football coach Jeff Woody today to get some information on former Bees defensive end Josh Eadie, who beat out 27 other players during a walk-on tryout last week and will be practicing with the Hokies this spring.
Woody gave me some good stuff on Josh, a senior (redshirt junior on your official roster), and I’ll be sharing that info in a story on Josh sometime in the next couple of weeks. I’ve yet to talk to Josh. I figured I’d wait until he had a few practices under his belt to interview him.
Woody also gave me updates on Logan Thomas, one of Tech’s prized 2009 recruits, and rising senior Zach McCray, Thomas’s cousin and a Tech recruiting target this year.
As most Hokies followers are probably well aware, McCray, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound defensive end, is in high demand. Woody said he’s already received scholarship offers from Tech, Virginia, Tennessee, LSU, UCLA, North Carolina, West Virginia, etc., etc., etc. Before it’s all said and done, Notre Dame and Southern Cal could be on that list as well.
Thomas gives Tech an inside connection with McCray, but that doesn’t mean McCray, ranked the No. 50 overall prospect by Scout.com and No. 87 by Rivals, will follow his cousin.
Woody said McCray plans on hearing out many of his suitors, and he’s certain that unlike Thomas, who didn’t make an official visit before committing to Tech in the fall, McCray will take his allotted five official visits and a number of unofficial visits before making a decision.
“Logan wanted to keep quiet. Logan wanted to stay home. Logan’s not as flamboyant. Zach’s a little bit more flashy,” Woody said. “Zach is not a follower. Just because Logan’s at Tech, it’s not a guarantee that you’ll find Zach at Tech.”
Woody said McCray has already made unofficial trips to Rutgers and Tennessee and he plans on checking out UCLA sometime in the summer.
“He’s going to check them out. He’s going to see what’s going on in the world outside the friendly confines of Virginia,” Woody said. “He’ll take all five officials I bet. And obviously unofficials. I bet he’ll look at 20 schools.”
Woody said he and many other Brookville fans are following Tech’s backup quarterback battle closely. A lot of people would like to see Thomas, when he reports for fall practice, join the mix there with Ju-Ju Clayton and Marcus Davis for the chance to back up Tyrod Taylor.
Thomas is hitting the weights hard, and he’s throwing the discus now for the Bees track team. He’ll eventually run hurdles, but he’s getting a breather right now. It’s been a whirlwind for the guy. He’s been going non-stop since the summer with football and basketball and track. Factor in the whole recruiting process and he’s probably a bit weary.
But no fear Hokies fans. He’s working hard to get ready for the coming season.
“I expect big things out of Logan. He’s killing the weight room right now. He’s actually gotten bigger since basketball season,” Woody said of the 6-6 Thomas. “He’s 235 easy right now. With the weight room work that he’s doing right now, I would be surprised if he was 240, 245 going into camp this year.”
