Delaney approaching a milestone

4:10 p.m.
Virginia Tech senior guard Malcolm Delaney could join an exclusive club Wednesday at N.C. State. With 20 points, Delaney would become only the fourth player in Hokies history to score 2,000 points.

Delaney, who is averaging 18.1 points but has scored 20 or more points seven times this season, would become only the 44th player in ACC history to reach 2,000 points for his career.

Here’s where he currently stands on Tech’s all-time scoring list:
1. Coles – 2,484 points
2. Curry – 2,389
3. Soloman – 2,136
4. Delaney – 1,980

Delaney will most likely finish his career third on the school’s all-time scoring list. He would need to go on quite an offensive binge to catch Coles or Curry.

Delaney could join Soloman as the only Tech players to score 2,000 career points and not play in the NCAA Tournament. The Hokies missed the NCAAs in Delaney’s first three seasons, and they could get left out this season.

ESPN “Bracketologist” Joe Lunardi currently has Tech in the NCAA Tournament as an 11-seed. The Hokies still have work to do, however, if they want to receive an elusive at-large bid to the Big Dance.

Here are some other things to consider as Tech prepares to face N.C. State on Wednesday night in Raleigh …

*Virginia Tech needs as many top 100 wins as it can get. The Hokies are currently ranked 68th in the Ratings Percentage Index, and they are 5-4 against top 100 teams this year. N.C. State is ranked 97th with a 2-9 record against top 100 teams.

*The Hokies currently have only one top 50 win. Two of its biggest victories came against Oklahoma State and Florida State, both of which have recently dropped out of the top 50. OSU has lost five of six and FSU suffered a crushing loss at Clemson in its last game.

*N.C. State is 8-2 at RBC Center this year. Its only losses came against Arizona and Duke, teams that lead their respective conference standings.

*Tech had lost 19 straight games against N.C. State in Raleigh before ending the skid with a 72-52 win at RBC Center last February. The Hokies are 1-3 against the Wolfpack at RBC Center.
