Delaney named honorable mention AP All-American
Virginia Tech guard Malcolm Delaney is no stranger to recognition. Last month, the junior was a unanimous first-team All-ACC selection and became the first Hokies player to receive ACC player of the year votes.
Now comes a new distinction. He was named to multiple All-America teams.
Delaney, who was a fourth-team selection by The Sporting News last month, was named to the Associated Press’ honorable mention All-America squad Monday.
He is only the second Hokies player to be named to multiple All-America teams in the same season, joining Dell Curry, who made five different All-America teams back in 1986.
Delaney, a Baltimore native, led the ACC in scoring average this season (20.2) and led the Hokies in assists (4.45). He also averaged 1.2 steals and 3.7 rebounds per game and was third in the conference in free throw percentage (84.2).
According to the ACC’s record book, Delaney is only the third Hokies player (Curry, Zabian Dowdell in 2007) to earn All-America honors, and only he and Curry were named to the AP’s team. Curry was a second-team selection in 1986.
Delaney and the Hokies, who finished 25-9 overall and 10-6 in the ACC, exceeded expectations this season by finishing tied for third in the ACC and matching a school single-season record for wins.
However, they missed out on their ultimate goal of making the NCAA tournament. After being one of the first teams left out of the Big Dance, Tech set its sites on making it to New York for the semifinals and championship of the National Invitation Tournament.
The Hokies made it to the NIT quarterfinals and lost 79-72 to Rhode Island last Wednesday to just miss out on a trip to the Big Apple.
