Delaney named to All-ACC first team

For only the second time in six years, Virginia Tech has a men’s basketball player on the All-ACC first team.

Junior point guard Malcolm Delaney was one of three unanimous selections to this season’s team, along with Maryland guard Greivis Vasquez and Duke guard Jon Scheyer. Delaney joins guard Zabian Dowdell (2006-07) as the only Hokies to be named to the ACC’s first team.

The selections were announced Monday. Tech junior guard Dorenzo Hudson, who improved his scoring average by 9.8 points this season, was named to the third team.

Delaney is the lifeblood of Tech’s team, which has already made a strong case for an at-large selection into the NCAA tournament.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Baltimore native leads the ACC in scoring (20.9) and is the clear-cut leader of a team that finished tied for third in the conference standings after being picked to finish eighth in the preseason.

Delaney also leads the Hokies in assists (4.2 per game) and free throw percentage (85.1).

The three-year starter has four games of 31 or more points, which is by far the most in the ACC. In fact, only Delaney and Scheyer (twice) have surpassed 30 points more than once.

Delaney, who was named to the third-team last year, has been especially productive lately. In his last three games, he is shooting 50 percent (22 of 44) from the field and is averaging 26.7 points and 5.3 assists.

He scored 32 points against Georgia Tech on Saturday in an 88-82 win that all but locked up an NCAA bid for the Hokies.

Tech matched its best ACC record (10-6) with that win over the Yellow Jackets.

It earned the fourth seed and a first-round bye in the ACC tournament, and it will play on Friday at 2 p.m. at Greensboro Coliseum against the winner of Thursday’s first-round game between Wake Forest and Miami.

The ACC also announced its all-freshman and all-defensive teams Monday. Curiously, no Tech player made the defensive team. Jeff Allen is tied for third in the league in steals—he’s a 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward, mind you—and Terrell Bell has turned into one of the best one-on-one defenders in the conference.

Here are Tech’s past All-ACC selections, and below is a full rundown on this season’s All-ACC teams.
