Fans gobbling up tickets to title game.

According to a press release emailed out at 10:30 this morning, less than 5,500 tickets remain for the Dec. 4 ACC championship game in Charlotte. No. 13 Virginia Tech has already clinched the Coastal Division and a spot in the game and will play the Atlantic Division champ, either N.C. State or Florida State, in the title game at Bank of America Stadium.

More than 65,000 tickets have already been sold, according to the release. That’s a stark contrast to recent years for the ACC’s championship contest. Recent turnouts for the game, which was held in Jacksonville for three years and Tampa for two, have been poor.

The Hokies’ last championship game win, over Boston College in 2008 at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium, drew a paltry 27,360.

But this year is the first in Charlotte, which is a much more reasonable destination for most of the league’s fans, especially those of Viginia Tech. A title game involving the Hokies was sure to draw a big crowd. We could actually see a full stadium if N.C. State beats Maryland on Saturday to clinch a spot against Tech.

We might still see a capacity crowd if Florida State wins the Atlantic. The Hokies and Seminoles played in front of the biggest crowd for an ACC championship game in 2005—72,749 fans—but that was the first year for the game and it was in Jacksonville, a manageable drive for FSU fans.

Neither of the ACC’s Florida schools—FSU or Miami—have made the championship game since then.
