Seth Greenberg will remain Virginia Tech’s basketball coach for the foreseeable future after agreeing to new contract terms Friday.
Greenberg, who made $950,000 this year, received a raise over the remaining four years of his current contract, and his pact was extended another two years through 2016.
According to a Virginia Tech press release, terms of Greenberg’s new contract will be released within the next 10-14 days, when everything is finalized and signed.
Greenberg’s name was recently mentioned among the short list of candidates to fill the vacant coaching job at St. John’s University.
Tech director of athletics Jim Weaver told reporters Friday that the New York school had not contacted him to request an interview with Greenberg, who is a Long Island native.
Weaver cut off St. John’s before it had an opportunity to talk to Greenberg.
“I am pleased that coach Greenberg will continue his mission at Virginia Tech and will lead the Hokies for the next six seasons,” Weaver said in the press release. “He has done an outstanding job in creating a program and environment that has the Hokies competitive year in and year out in the ACC.”
Greenberg, 53, has compiled a 132-94 record and has led the Hokies to five postseason appearances in his seven seasons in Blacksburg.
Under Greenberg’s watch, Tech has earned a first-round bye in the ACC tournament four times in its six seasons in the ACC. Greenberg won ACC coach of the year honors in 2005 and 08, and he finished third in the voting this season.
The Hokies have made the postseason four straight seasons, the last three in the National Invitation Tournament. They went 25-9 this season to tie a school single-season wins record, and they tied for third in the ACC with a 10-6 conference mark.
That surprising success – Tech was picked during the preseason to finish in the bottom half of the ACC during – still didn’t lead to an NCAA tournament appearance.
The Hokies instead went to the NIT, where they won two games before losing to Rhode Island 79-72 Wednesday night in the quarterfinals. It was the second time in three years they just missed making it to New York for the NIT semifinals.
A season of tough breaks – coming up short of the NCAAs and a trip to New York – finally ended with some good news for Tech fans.
After leading the Hokies to new heights in his short time with the team, Greenberg will return next season with the goal of taking the program even higher.
“I am excited to be afforded the opportunity to continue to build the basketball program at Virginia Tech,” Greenberg said in the press release. “What makes Virginia Tech so special is the people and their passion for the university.
“My family has embraced all that the university stands for, and I feel this is where I belong.”
