It’s official: Virginia Tech-Boise State moved to Labor Day

Virginia Tech will open its 2010 football season against Boise State, according to a release posted to the Washington Redskins Web site.

The game, originally scheduled for Oct. 2 at the Redskins’ FedEx Field in Landover, Md., will be played on Monday, Sept. 6 and be broadcast nationally by ESPN. Kickoff time will be released at a later date.

So let the buildup begin. The Hokies had a busy offseason last year preparing to face eventual national champion Alabama in the 2009 opener at the Georgia Dome. This game could be just as intriguing.

Boise State is already receiving much attention as a dark horse national championship contender in 2010 after completing an undefeated 2009 with a Fiesta Bowl victory over TCU.

The Broncos return all but one starter from that 14-0 team. Tech, which has national championship aspirations of its own, appears to be BSU’s biggest obstacle in its attempt at a second straight undefeated season.

The Hokies return 12 starters from last season’s team, which went 10-3 and finished 10th in both major polls after beating Tennessee in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

Following the 2010 season opener against BSU, Tech is expected to host JMU on Sept. 11. The remainder of its schedule will be released sometime later this month.

Tech will play a season opener at FedEx Field for the second time. It lost to eventual national champion Southern Cal, 24-13, in the 2004 season opener.

The Hokies are also scheduled to play Cincinnati at FedEx Field in 2012.
