More honors for Virginia Tech guard Malcolm Delaney
Virginia Tech guard Malcolm Delaney received a couple more postseason honors Tuesday.
He was a fourth-team selection on the Sporting News All-America team and was also named to the United States Basketball Writers Association’s All-District 3 team.
The junior from Baltimore is the first Hokies player to earn All-America honors since Zabian Dowdell was an honorable mention selection to the 2007 Associated Press All-America team.
Delaney was one of four ACC players to make the Sporting News’ five All-America teams. Maryland’s Greivis Vasquez was a first-team pick; Duke’s Jon Scheyer was named to the second team, and Duke’s Kyle Singler was a fifth-team selection.
The USBWA All-District 3 team was also dominated by ACC selections. Seven of the 10 picks were from the ACC, including Virginia’s Sylven Landesberg. District 3 consists of colleges and universities from Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Delaney, who leads the ACC with a 20.9 scoring average, was a unanimous first-team All-ACC selection, and he was also named ACC player of the week for his performance in wins against N.C. State and Georgia Tech last week.
Moreover, Delaney was named on two of the 53 ballots in voting for ACC player of the year, an honor that went to Vasquez.
Delaney is the first Tech player to ever get a vote for ACC player of the year.
