News and notes from Tuesday’s media session
**Virginia Tech will wear maroon jerseys Saturday, the first time it’ll wear its traditional home colors for a true road game since Sept. 8, 2007 against LSU. If you’ll remember, that game didn’t go very well. The Hokies lost 48-7 in Death Valley.
**Speaking of jerseys, the Hokies make a return trip Saturday to GT’s Bobby Dodd Stadium, where four VT players had their jerseys stolen from the locker room prior to a 2007 game. QB Sean Glennon, CB Brandon Flowers, FS Kam Chancellor and QB Tyrod Taylor had to wear modified white GT jerseys with tape covering the logos on their names scribbled in black magic marker on the back. Glennon passed for 296 yards and two touchdowns in that Thursday night win. The jersey he wore is in VT’s trophy room at Merriman Center.
When asked which player on the current Tech team would be popular enough to have his jersey sniped from GT’s locker room, Hokies OG Sergio Render said, “I think it’s me because I’m from Georgia, and I’m big and sexy. … Nah, just kidding. I think it would be Ryan Williams or Tyrod because they’re playing great football up to this point.”
**Saturday’s VT-GT game will feature the top three rushers in the ACC – Williams and GT’s Jonathan Dwyer and Josh Nesbitt.
**Every starting offensive lineman graded out over 80 percent in Saturday’s BC game. Said Tech coach Frank Beamer: “Slowly, we’re getting caught back up to where our offensive line should be.”
**As noted in an earlier post, Tech return man Dyrell Roberts is leading the ACC and is second nationally in kickoff return average (39.88). Maybe that explains why so many teams have kicked off out of bounds recently, resulting in penalties that gave Tech the ball at its own 40 to start its drives. Duke kicked out of bounds twice against the Hokies and BC did once.
“I think sometimes people try get directional kicking and don’t get it in the corner; they get it out of bounds,” Beamer said. “I’m sure Dyrell is a factor, too, because he is dangerous. And that other guy, Wilson, he’s dangerous too. We just have to get him untracked a little bit.”
**Georgia Tech leads the nation in punt returns, with a 26.7 average. Jerrard Tarrant has done all the damage by himself. He has two touchdowns in seven returns this season – a 68-yarder against Jacksonville State in the season opener and an 85-yarder in week two against Clemson.
The Hokies have been much better in punt coverage this season. Opponents are averaging only 9.2 yards on 16 returns. Tech allowed three punt returns for touchdowns last season, including a blocked punt for a score in the season opener against East Carolina.
“The key to it is being able to get height on the ball, and Brent (Bowden) has done a good job of that for the most part this year,” Beamer said. “If you can get the height, you can get down there and cover. If you hit those low liners, then they can get it set up and it’s going to come right back at you.”
**Here’s a nice stat … Tech is averaging 21.8 yards per pass completion in its last three games. To put that into context, the Hokies averaged 10.8 yards per completion last season.
**Seven different players have accounted for the Hokies’ last seven touchdowns, and nine of the 11 players who have scored this season for Tech are freshmen or sophomores.
