Postgame notes from Virginia Tech-Georgia Tech men’s basketball

Observations from Virginia Tech’s 102-77 win over Georgia Tech:

THE HOKIES eclipsed the 100-point mark for only the fifth time in Seth Greenberg’s eight seasons as coach. Of those games, three went to double overtime. The scoring output was Tech’s highest in an ACC game, eclipsing the 100 points scored in last year’s double-overtime loss to Maryland at Cassell Coliseum.

Here is a list of the 100-point games in Greenberg’s tenure:
2010-11: VT 102, Georgia Tech 77
2009-10: Maryland 104, VT 100 (2OT)
2009-10: VT 103, Seton Hall 94 (2OT)
2008-09: VT 116, Duquesne 108 (2OT)
2004-05: VT 102, MD Eastern Shore 50

GREENBERG has employed a 2-3 zone defense at times this season. Sunday, he used a 3-2 zone for the first time. He estimated that the Hokies used the defense for 10 possessions, and it could be a part of the gameplan in future games as well.

SOPHOMORE GUARD Erick Green scored 15 points on 5 of 9 shooting (3 for 3 from 3-point range) eight days after missing all eight of his field goal attempts and scoring only one point in Tech’s 58-56 loss at Boston College. He said he worked in practice during the week on not falling away on his shot. He was drifting backward on his shot, which was causing some of his attempts to fall short.

SENIOR GUARD Malcolm Delaney scored 33 points, his second 30-point game of the season and eighth of his career. He had 30 back in November against UNLV. His career-high is 37 against Clemson during his sophomore year.

SENIOR FORWARD Jeff Allen had 25 points and 14 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double. He has 12 double-doubles this season, and he leads all current ACC players with 40 career double doubles. According to the ACC’s notes, Allen is only three blocked shots shy of becoming the first ACC player ever to have career totals of 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds, 200 steals and 150 blocked shots.

THE HOKIES avenged their Jan. 25 loss to Georgia Tech (72-57) in Atlanta. In that previous game Delaney (3 for 11, 8 points, 8 turnovers) and Green (3 for 15, 9 points, 2 turnovers) combined to go 6 for 26, 17 points and 10 turnovers. On Sunday, the two guards combined to go 14 for 23 with 48 points and seven turnovers.

VIRGINIA TECH’S STARTING FIVE scored 97 of the team’s points. It wasn’t until Greenberg pulled the entire starting lineup that a Hokies reserve scored. In the final 1:02, Paul Debnam made a 2-point jumper and Tyrone Garland hit a 3.
