Preseason All-ACC and scheduling matters

Virginia Tech was well represented on the preseason All-ACC football team released today. The media members who voted on this team, which is based totally on expectations for the 2009 season, apparently are high on TE Greg Boone, OG Sergio Render, DE Jason Worilds and FS Kam Chancellor.

I think Stephan Virgil should have had a place on the team as well, but the CB spots went to Virginia’s Ras-I Dowling and UNC’s Kendric Burney. Virgil had six INTs last season and returned a fumble and blocked PAT back for points. He also forced a fumble.

Burney had three INTs. He had some big tackle (78 total) and tackle for loss (7.5) numbers, but is that really the measure of a good corner? Dowling had three picks, 43 tackles and five tackles for loss.

Burney and Dowling are both fine players, don’t get me wrong, but I have a gut feeling Virgil is going to have a monster season, just like his three predecessors at the boundary corner position: Macho Harris, Brandon Flowers and Jimmy Williams.

A lot of people are counting on Chancellor to come back from a sub-par 2008 season. He capped it off with a huge performance in the Orange Bowl, but all in all it was a disappointing year. To be fair, Chancellor was adjusting to his fourth position as a Hokie. He started his career as a QB, moved to CB his freshman year, Rover his sophomore year and FS his junior year. Finally he’ll get to play the same position for a second straight year, and expectations are high he’ll have a banner year before moving on to his NFL career.

Here are the complete teams. It’ll be fun to look back at the end of the season to see just how accurate the media was in making its picks.

One more thing. The Hokies announced today they’ve added Arkansas State to the 2011 non-conference slate. It’ll be a home game, just like their previous three games against ASU in 1994, 97 and 2002.

Tech’s non-conference schedule in 2011 now looks like this.

Arkansas State

East Carolina
