Scrimmage No. 1 is in the books
If Friday’s scrimmage was any indication, Virginia Tech will have quite a tailback twosome this fall. Redshirt freshman Ryan Williams, who is vying for the backup spot behind Darren Evans, rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries. The former SuperPrep All-American had an 80-yard touchdown run early in the scrimmage, the first full scrimmage of spring practice for the Hokies.
“That’s the best feeling I’ve had since I’ve been here,” Williams, who redshirted last season, said in a written release. “To go (80) yards on your first carry … it just doesn’t get any better than that.”
The scrimmage was 85 plays. The first team defense faced the first team offense on only three series. Williams’ touchdown run came against the second-team D.
Still, it was an encouraging sign. A one-two punch of Evans, who rushed for a school freshman record 1,265 yards last season and was the Orange Bowl MVP, and Williams could prove quite formidable.
Other scrimmage highlights …
