Sources say former Glass star Cornell Brown joining Hokies’ football staff

According to multiple media outlets, former E.C. Glass football standout Cornell Brown is expected to join the Virginia Tech football staff for the 2011 season. An official announcement is expected sometime this week, possibly Friday.

It’s not known yet what Brown’s job description will be or what kind of movement will be required on Tech’s current staff to make room for his addition.

Brown, an Englewood, N.J., native, starred for the Hilltoppers in the early 90s and was a two-time All-America defensive end at Virginia Tech in 1995 and 96.

He spent that last three years as the defensive line coach of the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

After a seven-year NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens, Brown, 35, joined the coaching ranks in 2005 with the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe. During the spring months of 2006 and 07, Brown served as defensive line coach of the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europe, and in the fall months of those years he was a graduate assistant at Tech.

This is the Hokies’ second coaching move this week. On Monday, Shane Beamer, son of Tech head coach Frank Beamer, took a job as the Hokies’ running backs coach, replacing longtime assistant Billy Hite, who moved into an administrative position.
