Tech coaches confirm Logan Thomas redshirt plan

News out of today’s scrimmage in Blacksburg was that Logan Thomas is redshirting. But you knew that already, right?

Yep, the Brookville grad, who is still in a competition for the team’s backup quarterback job, will sit unless an emergency situation calls for him to play. Just like I wrote two days ago.

Anyway, the other big items from today’s scrimmage ...

Freshman RB David Wilson did not play, though he probably could have. The Hokies decided to sit him to give his ailing left shoulder another day to recover. He should be ready to go full in practice Monday, head trainer Mike Goforth said.

Sophomore RB Josh Oglesby sat, but he also could have played. He had a nasty infection in his left heel, one that blew his foot up to the size of a human head, RB coach Billy Hite said. He should be ready to go full for Monday as well, Goforth said.

RB Ryan Williams was kicked in the left ankle and suffered a slight sprain. It’s not anything that should keep him from practicing, Goforth said.

Starting QB Tyrod Taylor played well, completing 8 of 11 passes for 78 yards. The other two QBs didn’t play so well. Both Thomas (2 for 10, 16 yards) and Ju-Ju Clayton (6 of 10, 61 yards) threw interceptions. LB Barquell Rivers returned Thomas’s 38 yards before Thomas took him down himself near the sideline. Cris Hill picked off Clayton shortly thereafter and returned it 21 yards.

Matt Waldron, who is expected to start the season as Tech’s placekicker, made all four of his field goals, from 31, 32, 43 and 30 yards. Chris Hazely (28) and Cody Journell (37) also made their only field goal attempts.

Hite said Kenny Lewis is vowing to be back this season, though he has spent the last two weeks on his parents’ couch while receiving IV fluids 24 hours a day. He has had four surgeries to fix a torn Achilles tendon, the last of which was performed two weeks ago to clean up an infection.

A note about Wednesday’s scrimmage. It’s closed to the public and media. The Hokies have some critical things they want to work on in preparation for the Sept. 5 season opener against Alabama.
