Tech DB Hosley racking up awards
Virginia Tech cornerback Jayron Hosley picked up another national award Tuesday for his performance in the Hokies’ 41-30 victory at N.C. State on Saturday.
Hosley, who tied a Tech single-game record with three interceptions against the Wolfpack, was named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week by the Football Writers Association of America.
It’s Hosley’s third award of the week. He was also named the National Defensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Foundation and the defensive back of the week by the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Hosley, who leads the ACC with four interceptions, has had two touchdown-saving interceptions in each of the last two games. He leads the nation in passes defended at 2.25 per game.
Based on Tech’s grading system, which awards points for big plays like interceptions, tackles, passes defended, Hosley racked up a whopping 63 points in the game against the Wolfpack. Hokies coach Frank Beamer said it’s not a record for a Tech player, but it’s close.
“That’s up there. I’d say it’s in the top five,“ Beamer said.
To put Hosley’s grade into context, the next best defensive back for the Hokies on Saturday was Antone Exum with 44 points. Safety Eddie Whitley had 24, and cornerback Rashad Carmichael had 18.
“I haven’t scored much (in past games),“ Hosley said Tuesday. “I think my highest is 20-something. I’m not sure.
“I really don’t pay attention to that much, because you’re either making plays or you’re not. But it felt good to know I had made those plays. It’s all about making plays or not at the end of the day.“
