Tennessee wins ticket battle

The Chick-fil-A Bowl is still three weeks away, but Tennessee has already chalked up a victory over Virginia Tech … in ticket sales, that is.

Vols fans gobbled up their team’s 17,000-ticket allotment. According to some reports, 11,000 of those tickets were sold before the bowl matchup was officially announced Sunday.

Virginia Tech director of athletics Jim Weaver said Thursday he expects the Hokies to sell out their allotment as well. He said approximately 13,400 tickets had been sold by the end of the business day Wednesday and that the rest could be gone by the end of the week.

“We will find a way to make sure we sell all of our tickets,” Weaver said.

If the Hokies sell the rest of their tickets, that would mean a 13th straight sellout for the CFA Bowl. Few bowls, BCS or not, can contend with that streak. In fact, the Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl are the only bowls to have longer sellout streaks.

Tech will be the road team in the game, which is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and will be televised nationally, and “unopposed” to quote a word Weaver used, on ESPN.

The Hokies are expected to wear their white jerseys and maroon helmets. Tennessee is expected to wear its orange jerseys.
