Tuesday news and notes

SATURDAY’S GAME
No. 19 Nebraska at No. 13 Virginia Tech, 3:30 p.m., Lane Stadium, Blacksburg

TELEVISION
The game will be nationally televised by ABC. Sean McDonough will do the play-by-play, and Matt Millen, the former president and CEO of the Detroit Lions from 2000-08, will provide color commentary.

INJURY UPDATE
It’s still unknown whether starting tight end Greg Boone (SC joint sprain) or starting cornerback Stephan Virgil (left knee sprain) will be available to play Saturday against Nebraska.

Both participated in the early part of practice Tuesday, and neither were wearing blue non-contact jerseys. We won’t know their status for the game until the injury report is released Thursday evening.

OF NOTE
According to my research, Saturday’s game will be the 19th in which two ranked opponents square off at Lane Stadium. Here’s the list. Notice how the Hokies, when ranked, have lost three straight at home to ranked opponents.

YOUTH IS SERVED
Eight of Tech’s 10 touchdowns this season have been scored by freshmen or redshirt freshmen (six by redshirt freshman tailback Ryan Williams, one by true freshman running back David Wilson and one by true freshman cornerback Jayron Hosely on a punt return). The other two were scored by sophomore wide receiver Dyrell Roberts.
More along those lines, 10 Tech players saw their first college action Saturday against Marshall.

TYROD MOVING UP THE CHARTS
Hokies quarterback Tyrod Taylor needs four rushing yards to move past Michael Vick for third place in career rushing yards by a Tech quarterback.
