Virginia Tech’s Jeff Allen wins hoops award

Virginia Tech forward Jeff Allen was voted ACC player of the week by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

The junior from Washington, D.C., averaged 18 points, 11.5 rebounds and three assists in wins over VMI and Penn State that improved the Hokies to 8-1, their best start in coach Seth Greenberg’s seven seasons in Blacksburg.

Allen came off the bench to score 24 points and grab 13 rebounds in a 98-73 victory over VMI on Wednesday. Then on Saturday night, he returned to the starting lineup and had 12 points and 10 rebounds in a big 66-64 win at Penn State.

The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Allen now has 21 career double-doubles. This is his first ACC player of the week award, and it’s the first for a Hokies player since guard Malcolm Delaney earned the honor last January.

Tech returns to action Saturday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Charleston Southern at Cassell Coliseum.
