Wright has answers for Hokies
GREENSBORO—Justin Wright was more than dominant. The Virginia Tech pitcher threw as well as anybody could against a Georgia Tech offense that is as dangerous as any in the country.
Wright, a junior southpaw, threw a complete-game four-hitter in the Hokies’ 6-2 victory over the Yellow Jackets on Thursday night in the ACC Tournament at NewBridge Bank Park.
It was Tech’s first-ever ACC Tournament win, and it puts them in a favorable position heading into the third day of the round-robin tournament Friday.
“We got more than a quality start (from Wright),” Hokies coach Pete Hughes said. “That was probably the best starting performance I’ve ever seen at this level in my coaching career. He was dominant against a dominant offense.”
Wright, who was tagged for seven earned runs in 3 1/3 innings in his last start against North Carolina on May 20, struck out a career high 15 (which is the most by a Hokies pitcher since Ryan Kennedy punched out 15 against Navy in 2005) and walked only two in his second complete game of the season.
He credited his strong curve ball for his dramatic turnaround from his last start. His breaking ball wasn’t doing what he wanted it to do against North Carolina, but he was hitting his marks with it against the Yellow Jackets.
“Last start, I didn’t have my curve ball at all, and being able to throw it for a strike was huge,” Wright said. “My fastball was moving in and out and I was able to get ahead of hitters.”
He silenced a Yellow Jackets lineup that is second in the nation in home runs and eighth in runs.
“We didn’t have the answers,” Georgia Tech coach Danny Hall said. “Mr. Wright had the answers tonight.”
