Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What are your favorite sports teams?
I only follow two teams closely: the Atlanta Braves and Dallas Cowboys. People used to accuse me of being a bandwagon fan, but anybody who's followed the Braves and Cowboys the last decade know that can't possibly be true.
2. What's the best part of your job?
I would say the best part of being a travel Virginia Tech beat reporter is the people I am fortunate enough to interact with, from the other reporters on the beat to the coaches and players. Another good thing is the road trips. It's great to be able to experience college football at places like Clemson and Florida State and college basketball at Duke and North Carolina.
3. What's the best ACC road trip?
Other than Blacksburg, which truly is an underrated college town, the nicest campus in the ACC has to be North Carolina. No offense to places like Florida State and Clemson, which have their charm, but Chapel Hill is a gorgeous town, and Carolina fans love their Tar Heels.
4. How 'bout best ACC venue?
As far as current ACC venues, there's nothing like Cameron Indoor Stadium. It's not much fun covering a game there - you have to climb over press row and fans literally are crammed up against you - but the atmosphere is second to none. Former venue? The old Orange Bowl stadium in Miami was a fun place to be. Again, not great for reporters trying to file on deadline, but I got chills when I thought of all the great football moments that occurred there.
5. Best sports memory?
My first Masters - as a fan - was a treat. There's nothing like following Tiger Woods for a few holes and setting up in Amen Corner while the groups come through. The New York Yankees-Virginia Tech benefit baseball game last year was great, too. The Yankees players and management were so cool and down to earth. It's not every day you get to walk into Tech's visitor's locker room at Lane Stadium and see A-Rod, Derek Jeter and Johnnie Damon hanging out.
